It's a pig. What can I do to drop the weight a bit for easier carry? It's the 12.5" barrel model with adjustable tactical stock and pistol grip.

You guys are hilarious.
Maybe it's just a psychological thing - it looks small, so it seems like it should weigh less.
On the other hand, I guess if I leave it the way it is, I won't have to go to the gym anymore.

Even if you strip the stock and forearm off, it's only gonna take off a few ounces. The receiver on those things are built like tanks, they are just plain heavy.

Great shotgun, don't get me wrong, loved the one I had, but there are lighter ones out there for sure.

Seriously, the plastic the Norinco stocks and forearm are made of is rather thick and heavy. You'll reduce the weight of these parts nearly in half by using a wood or Hogue overmolded set.

There's really no way to make an 870 based gun lightweight, and that's important if you're going to be hauling it around outdoors for any length of time.

I'm looking to swap my woods 870 for an Ithaca 37 or a Winchester mostly because of the weight issue.

Theyre all steel with a little tiny bit of plastic, youre not going to get a lightweight shotgun out of it. Quick question: are you carrying in your hands or on a sling? A proper fitting sling can make heavy guns much more bearable when youre carrying for long periods of time. Carrying in your arms will get tiring no matter the weight if you hold it long enough. The Mossberg 500/ Maverick 88 use an aluminum reciever and plastic trigger group and weigh noticeably less, but you'll be stepping up to an 18.5" barrel. There are various slings out there that can help too with cushy little pads and such, Butler Creek makes one with a stretchy shoulder pad that absorbs a bit of the bouncing while you walk.
