well there is one way my old instructor taught me: first, hold your weapon straight out in front of you. Keep your arms straight and up till you can't hold it anymore. Then drop down and do a few pushups, repeat this a few times a day for a few weeks and you should be good to go.

Go to the gym!
This is not a problem, can do this just fine.As per Col. Cooper, grasp your long-gun at the wrist of the stock and hold it muzzle up either straight out to the side or straight to the front. If you can't hold it there for at least a full minute without getting the shakes then it's too heavy or you're too weak.
Hit the gym...

A gun that may not be too heavy to carry from your vehicle to the range booth might be a different story if you have to haul it around all day in tough terrain. I'm pretty strong but I don't see the point in having to deal with extra weight if I don't have to in the latter case.
And anyway, no matter how strong you are you can't make a heavy gun handle as well as a light one.
