Put my HP9 on a diet.

Use a golf caddy ?

Seriously its not a paintball gun.
Its suppose to have the weight.

I suppose you can leave it at home and bring something else.

well there is one way my old instructor taught me: first, hold your weapon straight out in front of you. Keep your arms straight and up till you can't hold it anymore. Then drop down and do a few pushups, repeat this a few times a day for a few weeks and you should be good to go.

OK, this sounds like the best answer so far. Thanks everyone, I guess I just lost my focus

As per Col. Cooper, grasp your long-gun at the wrist of the stock and hold it muzzle up either straight out to the side or straight to the front. If you can't hold it there for at least a full minute without getting the shakes then it's too heavy or you're too weak.

Hit the gym...

A gun that may not be too heavy to carry from your vehicle to the range booth might be a different story if you have to haul it around all day in tough terrain. I'm pretty strong but I don't see the point in having to deal with extra weight if I don't have to in the latter case.

And anyway, no matter how strong you are you can't make a heavy gun handle as well as a light one.

IMO one of the best features of the HP9 is that is a steel copy of the Remington 870 a little cheaper than an 870 Express. When if I buy one I wouldn't be surprised if it weighed more than an 870.

You could buy an 870 express swap barrels and sell the HP9 on the EE? You might not get all your money back but you might like the weight better.

This is not a problem, can do this just fine.

This is more to the point of my original post.

In any case, I will carry it as-is, fully loaded with extra rounds, and see how it goes. No strap on it currently, so there's always that option- just need to figure out a way to carry it on strap so it will come easily to hand when needed.

Not using a scale on mine, but the stock and forearm feel like they weigh about 2/3 of what the barrel and receiver do. So it's not insignificant, and I would think you'd notice a difference with a lighter stock and forearm.

Are there aluminum magazine tubes you could replace the original with? Looks like it's welded or cast on so maybe not.

There are some youtube videos on how to carry with a sling and shoulder it quickly. I wonder how well they'd work with a big backpack on while hiking though..

A side by side comparison of an unaltered HP-9 with one that has an angled tapco t6 stock and an ATI forend reveals the modded gun IS noticably lighter. While mass is a good thing for shotguns from the standpoint of inertia, packing one around the bush all day that is purley defensive could arguably be as light as possible. BTW the modded HP-9 does seem to have increased recoil - which makes sense as it's lighter
