Well, we had a great opening morning, fresh snow and you could see deer through the hardwoods at 300 yds. Had 3 bucks and a doe on my pole opening morning, best ever.

Opening night was a different story, got back after seeing nothing and supper was on the table (a 12 lb porketta roast cokked on a spit for 3 hr's), wondered where my buddy Jamie was cause he never misses first grabs at supper but he told me before he left for the evening hunt he was staying in till dark. After I finished eating I said enough is enough and fired up my quad, the other guys said he'd be pissed at me but I went in anyways.

Found him at the bottom of his stand in a pool of blood telling me his back was broke, I shoved my mag light in the snow and told him I had to go back to camp and get some more help. Got back and told the guys what was up and we went in after him as one of the other guys hooked up the radio phone and called the ambulance, they were there in 10 minutes. Got him on a board and the six of us carried him out to the ambulance and got him to the nearest hospital, they then air evac'd him out to Toronto for surgey at 2 a.m. At first we heard he wasn't gonna walk again but I just got in from the hunting camp tonight and found out he'd be wearing a brace and fine in another 16 weeks. 3 fractured vertabrae, 3 broken ribs and a good gash that took a dozen staples in his head. Remeber this next time your heading out guys, wear your harness in your treestand.

Other than that we had a good week, went a visited HunterD Wednesday and then he swung over to my camp on Thursday night, had a great time shootin the bull with another gunnut again. (Sorry bout Mark Doug, he gets loud when he's got alot of wine in him);)

Mark brought his dad out for his first deer hunt with us and he and Mark both got bucks opening morning, I told them both that their family was never allowed back again!:D

Anyways, hunters 4 - Deer 1.

Doug, probably about 15' but he landed on his head, he's lucky to be alive and walking.

He was already talking about next year tonight when I was at the hospital visiting.

Jamie and I have been hunting together since we were 16, some of you regulars might remember this pic of him a few years ago.

I heard another hunter blew his hand off this week as well with a breach loader that was jammed.

We wanted to put a safety harness on Mark Tuesday night after having to many beers watching the hockey game on the stairs!;) :D

Nice eaters!!!.... Question though... How come many people from the east and/or the U.S. hang their deer by the head? Not that there is anything wrong with that but many hunters in western regions hang from the hind leg tendons.

Many of our deer hang in camp for the whole week before getting skinned. We hang from the head so that the drippings fall out the bottom and don't pool in the neck and start spoiling the meat. Makes for nice pics of the meat pole too!

Oh now you have gone and hi-jacked the thread, M12shooter!!!

Only those folks who don't know any better hang their deer by the head. The bright ones hang them head down, so the blood drains away from the choice cuts in the hind quarters. Of course, when you hang them head down, you split the brisket to the throat and remove the wind-pipe, so any liquid blood in the cavity runs out onto the ground.......

Now everybody put on their flame-proof suits..........

Never seen a deer hung upside down on the island yet.

We'd probably be laughed off the island if we did. It's a big thing down there to drive around and visit all the other camps and have a look at what they got, bring a sober driver.;)

That's rough Mad Dog! Hope your buddy makes a speedy recovery. Sure makes you think though! Not too much opportunity to hunt from tree stands in my part of Newfoundland, so never really gave it all that much thought. Lucky you decided to go check on him!

As for hanging meat...with no whitetail/mule deer in Newfoundland, its kinda' a non-issue. However, we always quarter our Moose and Caribou and hang those while we're in hunt camp. Typically like to get the hide off ASAP to aid in cooling of the meat. Most times we'll bring along a large can of black pepper to rub onto the damp flesh. When the meat "dries" the pepper and blood form a crust that protects the meat from flies. Usually will wrap the quarters in cheese cloth/meat socks as an added layer of protection and to help keep the meat cleaner.

MadDog, I certainly am pleased to hear that your friend will be OK and wish him a quick recovery.

Thanks guys.

FallGuy (fitting name for my buddy), apparently from what he remembers he was getting out of it and turned around for his pack that was hanging there and the portable had some play in it, it was a factory made stand but I don't know by who.
