Put Your Damn Belts On!

Joe, if he fell when he was coming down, no safety belt or harness would have helped him. The last thing I do before I come down from the stand is take off my safety strap, but then I am highly conscious of the fact that it is just me and the tree, and I do tend to hug that tree pretty strongly until I am on the ground......

A lot of the portables do have a bit of play in them, especially if you put weight on one side or the other of the platform. Most are only anchored at or near the top, and the bottom (platform part) typically has some kind of metal edge that bites into the tree. But it is like a pendulum, and placing all of your weight on one side is going to cause most stands to twist in that direction...... One thing that might be helpful when your lads are setting up portables is to have the ladder/tree steps/whatever at ninety degrees to the direction you will be facing, so you go into and out of the stand from the side. And the last step or two should be ABOVE the platform, so you step DOWN onto the platform when you get onto it - that way you can place your weight securely in the middle of the platform, not the side of it.

Should have added I am am really glad that your hunting partner is going to recover. It certainly reinforces my love of two feet on the ground at all times.

Thanks guys.

FallGuy (fitting name for my buddy), apparently from what he remembers he was getting out of it and turned around for his pack that was hanging there and the portable had some play in it, it was a factory made stand but I don't know by who.

The use of a haul rope may have saved him as well, but I wasn't there , so can't say for sure.

I hunt from a fixed stand and agree with Doug, it is getting in and out where we are most vunerable.

I was reminded of how dangerous it can be to be inattentive at elevation just recently in this article.

Man falls to death while cutting tree
Nov. 12, 2006. 11:05 PM
The Toronto Star

A Burlington man fell to his death while cutting a tree at his family’s Norfolk cottage earlier today, police say.
James Wood, 54, was about 25 feet in the air, standing near the top of a ladder when a tree-top he was cutting off began to fall at about 12:15 p.m., Ontario Provincial Police said. Wood leaned back to watch it fall and lost his balance before falling to the ground himself, police said.

Emergency crews found him with life-threatening injuries before taking him to Norfolk General Hospital where he was pronounced dead less than two hours later.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled for Monday.

WOW...Its a good thing that you went back for him. I just bought a ladder stand and it came with a 4 point harness. I will make damb sure I wear that thing. I hope your friend makes a full speedy recovery.

MadDog I have hunted on St. Joseph Island for almost 20 years and have always hung deer head down.

Bigpoint, is that name of yours where your from on the island?

If it is your right across the bay from my mom and dads house.:D

My place is on the Base line.

Doug: I made a point of telling him at the hospital that there will be no more portable stands used on my lots. Told him he's gotta built a stationary permanent like the rest of us use for next year.;)

Jump'ins I hope your buddy recovers! Glad to at least hear that he is not paralyzed!!!

Lucky lucky lucky in that sense...

Cheers

is it for real, that falling guy was one to fall?no matter what......good to hear he will be ok in a few weeks..
man to have you show up and hear him say.....my back is broke..must have been a bit of shock to the system.....
but i guess it was worse for him to think it was happing to him..
how long was he on the ground before you showed up?

Very sorry to hear of your friend's fall, I wish him,his family and friends all the best. I am glad to hear he will be walking again. He is lucky to have friend's that used their heads, and went back for him, or he may not be with us today.

He was getting out of the stand when it happened so I figure he was on the ground for about 1/2 hour before I started to think something was wrong.

He fell asleep the night before, before the rest of us and I wrote "8 point or bust" on his arm with a magic marker, guess he went for "bust". He said the doctors got a kick out of it when they cut his shirt off in the emerge.

Speedy recovery to Fallguy, Keep us updated on him
Looks like you guys had a great hunt though! Thanks for sharing your story and pic's .

FallGuy is not the Fell Guy, that would be Jamie, buddy of MadDog. AFAIK FallGuy is some fellow in the GTA who has never had a carrot or whatever placed in a spot of indignity by MadDog and his merry crew on St Joe's Island.....

It wasn't me! MadDog was only answering some questions for me!

BTW, I hunt in the French River area.
