Put your hunting where you mouth is!

From my bed this morning....

Just got back from a predator hunt on one of our properties in Alberta, heard plenty (and one coyote killed our barn cat the night before I left), but got skunked. In the meantime, I sorted out a crow and starling problem with my .410/.22, and had a glorious time doing it. Nailed maybe 10 birds and became proficient with my .410, pretty low key.

As for big game, haven't been out since last season, got nothing on my black bear tag. This season I'll likely go for an Elk in the Peace with my brother if I get the freezer space, if not, I'll just predator hunt for some nice pelts once they fill out.

Now, as for this thread, it's a bit silly, but I suppose I see the relevance. Much of the commentary in this forum comes from folks who don't get out, but it's pretty evident when you read it anyhow and doesn't need this thread to "make" the "real" hunters in my opinion. Heck, I feel I'm likely disqualified as a "real" hunter in this thread, but couldn't give two sh1ts personally. If a guy wants to talk hunting, all the more power to him. As they say, BS smells like it.

I did get a good laugh out of the quite apparently young, insulted mackillan on page 2. Amusing stuff, made my boring day.

wish i could get out alot more this summer with the kind invetation of ice hunter did 2 good gopher shoots. last fall was #### got a few birds but hoping this fall will be better got a buddy from england comming and a few weeks off so i will be happy if i tag both a mulie and a white tail buck, i am not as well versed on here as some but am just happy any time i can get out, if i transfer to the New Zealand army i hope to do some hunting down there aswell

Look at my avatar... :)

Approximately 1000lbs spring interior grizzly shot with 300gr Nosler Partition @ 2750fps muzzle velocity from my Rem 700 LSS 375RUM, distance was 230 to 250 yards @ 9:15pm June 1 2008.

Yes I am a hunter but married a vegetarian 6 years ago so don't shoot as many game animals as I used too, took up prospecting for a living just before we got married.

Mule/Blacktail deer count is 83, Whitetail is only 2 no pics to prove it though so I could be lying... :D

I married one too, 8 years now. She lets me hunt, I let her eat tofu.

My last hunt was December, when I hunted to the end of the whitetail season, taking a nice eight pointer on the last day with a crossbow.
My next hunt will be very soon, as black bear is about to open. Looking forward to a great moose and deer season this fall too.

If you hang around this forum long enough, you'll soon come to understand who's got the experience, just by reading the posts. Armchair hunters generally screw up when they believe the crap pushed in the gun rags.

We saw this guy near the coast last week. He was enjoying the breeze and getting a break from the bugs.

This little fellow is why we don't get mice in the cabin, so I don't bother him much.

We do however get red squirrels in the place, and my ZG-47 loaded with cast bullets (an '06 of course) accounted for 4 yesterday.

other than the crow that woke me up last month (he was asking for it...), my last hunt was deer this past fall. I got a nice big doe during black powder. Tasted great. Been hunting deer for the last 15 years and will keep doing it for many years to come. I might try moose for the second time (in my life) this year. I've hunted small game a LOT too.

This thread is pointless though, it's easy to tell who's full of it and who knows what their talking about without having them post here.

I know this seems pointless but it really isn't.
It just shows how fascinating the recent hunting experiences of a lot of people are, and conditions change from year to year.
I could've put up a poll but polls tend to be really pointless because they often leave out options which really represent a person.
So thank you to those who did post their hunts.
You have nothing to prove but your experiences are valuable.
Perhaps I could've titled this better, but then perhaps it would not have generated the response that it has.

It doesn't really matter who's out hunting or not. I take everyone's opinion with a grain of salt. I am in full belief that we are all full of sh*t, just varying degrees. I would never buy a gun, select a caliber or bullet because some online blowhard told me that it was the best damn thing. I like hearing other opinions, and they all become a component to my decision making process, but nothing here is gospel. In my mind, the hunters worth listening too are not the ones continually pontificating in online forums. I like talking to hunters who are just as interested in what I have to offer. Afterall, no matter how long you've been in the field, there is always more to learn. Cheers,

Patrick

My freezer has got more elk meat, deer and bear, geese and ducks in it than I know what to do with.

Answer your question?

I got a moose and a 4 point(western count) muley last season,3 coyotes and about a dozen grouse.I don't care for bear meat so I don't hunt them.Only 29 sleeps until hunting season in my area.

Who the F are you to use a ###ual metaphor against men who go to the range. Some guys are too old or handicapped or too busy for a period of time. You are a nobody forgeig:weird:ner to come in year and shoot off your face like you are hitler or sumpin

I don't understand this at all. Please enlighten me. The fact that we do have someone from a different country, no a different continent, subscribing to this forum is a great thing in my mind. He brings to the table a whole volume of different experiences, different game animals, tactics etc...
I won't say anything else, as I refuse to stoop down to throw insults or resort to name calling........

I have hunted for more than 50 years. I started hunting at 12, and am now 63. I missed two hunting seasons in my life. One I was in California on an extended stay which started in August and ended in December. The other was while I worked in Downtown Calgary, and was travelling home to BC each weekend.
Other than that, I have successfully hunted each year between 1957 and 2007. My game count at present is pretty decent, with Deer being the high number [well into three digits] Black bear would be in second place, but only because I was involved in a Control operation in orchard country for a couple of years [also into three digits] Moose fed my family of six for many years, with elk running a close second. Still chase elk first each year, and have scored the last 10 years in succession. Since I primarily hunt for the meat, antlers are not a prerequisite. I also hunt varmints [coyotes, wolves, etc] and pests [crows, columbian ground squirrels, starlings, etc] In 2007, my hunt started on October 6 for elk,

Rifle/Load/ as above
1 shot 90 yards, 4x3 buck, 142 lbs dressed.

I split the Elk with a hunting partner who was unsuccessful. I also shared with many family members in town. I love the outdoors, and enjoy the fruits of the harvest. Why would I not hunt? Regards, Eagleye.

I agree 100% and I hope the chap from "down under" enjoys our forum as much as we enjoy his contributions.
As for the hunting, in spite of the fact that I've got dozens of long guns, I'll probably not hunt this year because there's no one for me to hunt with.
Two of my buddies moved to Alberta and my other chum is in poor health, I'm 62, my health is great but to be honest I just don't like hunting alone anymore.
One of my long-time dreams is to go sheep hunting but I think that is just wishful thinking unless the local Zoo will let me in packing a rifle.
Who knows....there is always next year.....

Good enough...

I'll at least pretend to be your friend so I can hear good hunting stories. :)

My last deer hunt, was too long ago. November 22nd, 2005. At 9:30 AM while deer hunting in the Cold Lake Petroleum Oilfields, I popped a nice 225 lb buck with my now deceased father's 30-30 Winchester Carbine.
At an honest 260 yards. The shot had to be taken off-hand, as I was in a field of mature winter wheat, with no support handy. He saw me and I froze, I desperately sought out the best shooting position. Quickly came to the conclusion, this had to be a now or never shot. Forced my self to stay calm. Aimed at his white throat patch and squeezed the trigger ever so gently.
The shot seemed really loud, in the cool Alberta morning air. No preceviable wind, he dropped after one staggering step. I watched him as I stepped off the paces, reloaded carbine, eyes glued to him for signs of recovery.

Once at him, I gave him a totally uneccessary finisher out of habit. The first shot was two inches to the right of the centre, of his chest. My carbine had a three inch high sight in, at 100 yards. The bullet drop, I approximate at around 14-16 inches or so, from point of aim.
Proceded to tag/gut him right there.
It looked strange in my 4 door Saturn, I had to collapse the 60/40 rear seat to make room, tied his body onto the front passenger seat frame so he would not slide out of the car, because he almost did so, as I drove out.
I got alot of stares from the oil workers as I left the area.

PS: I practiced alot prior to the opening day, 30-30 rifle. First off the bench then offhand, at the 200 yard gong at the Cold Lake Fish & Game, outdoor range. By the way ammunition used was 150 grain Silvertip (old style) chest damage really extensive! I got the 77 grain spent copper jacket around here somewhere. Williams FP receiver sight & a Fire-Site, red optical bead, up front.

I swear on my Dad's grave this to be a true story.
Unfortuneately no witnesses, I myself, prefer hunting big game alone, if practical to do so.
But, I had a really sore back at the end of this day I tell you!

cheers......

I hunted many years with a 30-30 ....thats a Great shot at that distance with that rifle. :sniper:
I've hunted deer for about 23yrs, and last hunt I did was last Nov. deer season, and that was the first time in at least 10 years that I came back with nothing, unless you count the coyote I shot. Deer season is only 2 weeks in my zone, so I always try to book a week off of work. I used to do a lot of rabbit hunting with my uncle years ago, but GoodYear decided to take over the land I was hunting on and they dumped a million or so tires on a great hunting spot, and I have yet to find another spot to hunt small game. Though, Turkeys are starting to appear now in my deer hunting area, so looks like I will be taking my Turkey course very soon.
