Is it possible? I'm thinking it would be a quick shortcut to floating the barrel. Unfortunately I don't really have the means to test it before I buy.

Anyone done this?

It should work ok as the heavy barrel stock will have extra space for your standard profile barrel. The only thing that may be an issue is I believe Weatherby recommends having some forend pressure on the Vanguard barrel as opposed to being free floated. Check out your Weatherby Vanguard rifle manual as if I recall correctly it mentions something about it in there.

Thanks for your reply kc34.

I figured that would be the case, but I'm a little wary as apparently Tikka Varmint stocks will not work with a standard Tikka T3X. I emailed the manufacturer of the stock to see if they have something to say about it.

I guess I'll have to track down a manual. I bought my Vanguard 2 used on the EE and the seller didn't have a manual. I'll see if I can find it online or stop by an LGS and ask to take a peek at the manual from a new rifle.

It's all on their website...FAQ section
Why are some Weatherby rifles “free floated” and some are not?

We have found through our testing that barrels having a smaller outside diameter than our #3 contour require upward pressure to help stabilize the barrel for increased accuracy. Our free floated barrels have enough rigidity in the barrel for them to be free floated.

That said, a pencil barrel in a heavy barrel stock will be ugly as sin.

What is it you wish to achieve? Is there a problem with the factory stock that can't be resolved by correcting the LOP, stabilizing, and a performing a bedding job? Those procedures are typically much less expensive than the purchase of one of the better after market stocks, that still require bedding for best performance.

If the rifle is going to be used in the field, unless its filled, the HB barrel channel will be a magnet for debris. If it is filled, sufficient weight could be added to the forend to affect the rifle's balance. Another consideration is that target and varmint rifle stocks typically have wide forends, that will prove detrimental to handling in situations where the rifle will be used like a sporter, although I don't know how you intend to use the rifle.

Then you will want to leave it as is.

Oh No, it is a project that must be done .
Imagine all the surface area around areas like the barre channel and the mag well and such.
The super extra clearance will act as super cooling for those very long shot strings while developing reload data.

Pressure points in the barrel channel is a very old effective method of creating shot to shot consistency, it's not just a Weatherby thing. I have commercial Mausers from the 30's that had that design feature. It works.

There isn't really a problem with the gun, and I primarily use it for target shooting. Posted an add on the EE, someone offered me a HB Hogue stock for it. Was just wondering if it would work or if it would be an actual upgrade.

Don't know why I've garnered so much hostility for asking a simple question. I figured that this would be the place to come for firearms knowledge. Guess I was wrong. I'll stay out of the CGN forums in the future, seeing as how I'm being attacked for asking a question. Thanks for your time.

Hogue make a standard barrel channel stock for the Vanguard that is free floated. It's what the Howa's come in.

I have have been using a series 1 Vanguard with standard profile barrel in a Houge heavy barrel overmold stock for years hunting yotes. It can shoot a 5 shot group of federal black box .223 in under 1" at 100 yards all day. Good luck.

Thanks for the answer. Maybe I will try it.

Lame attempt at humor on my part.
There are no stupid question ...only stupid answers. If your cobbling something together thats one thing.
Again, this is the internet and context can be taken in either direction.
Best Regards,

The aluminum pillar bedding in the Houge stocks are a great upgrade from the standard stocks. I also had a Vanguard in a Boyd's thumbhole laminate stock, but didn't like the overall feel of taking quick shots with the thumbhole stock. For a bench rifle, maybe the thumbhole stock might suit you better, but the barrel wasn't free floated in the Boyd's.

I'm willing to bet the bedding is more important than the floating barrel.
