Putting an ADL stock on a BDL?

I am in the process of getting a M700 7mm-08 and was wanting to make a real lightweight gun for the mountains.

Is it a pain to put an ADL McMillian stock on a BDL? I know I have to buy a new trigger guard and I was wanting to use a Williams trigger guard, but will the mag box work? How does the front screw in the ADL trigger guard attach since on a BDL there is no screw there?

Thanks,

most 700 actions have the screw hole in the receiver for the ADL trigger guard front screw. Your BDL mag box will be too shallow....I might have a short ADL box here....I'll look. I do have an aluminium ADL trigger-guard.

Agreed - you need a longer mag box. the ADL mag box also needs to be screwed to the receiver - there's a little tab at the back of the receiver that mates with a hole on a 700 receiver. I think the newer 700 receivers made since the ADL was discontinued a few years ago no longer have the holes for the ADL trigger guard and mag box, so you're better off using an older BDL to convert unless you like paying gunsmithing fees.

I just looked at my new SPS and it has both screw holes, for the front trigger-guard screw and the mag box tab...but ADL's don't really need the mag box screw. Blind mag M70's and Savages don't have it. The box can't go anywhere.

If I am looking to cut weight and make a great gun to pack in the mountains, is it worth going with the ADL style or not?

Any input on that?

Thanks,

I think the weight savings are minimal. The Reminton stock BDL bottom metal is aluminum, not steel so it's light already.

If I switched to an ADL, it would be because of the availability of inexpensive aftermarket STEEL trigger guards ;)

I've just carried out an ADL switch to a BDL. Everything mentioned above is true and also the BDL box is shorter than the ADL box (got a little bent tab with screw hole / screw to secure it to the 700 reciever).

I did employ a BDL box in an ADL once and this move resulted in very unreliable feeding patterns that we ended up using this ADL as a single shot. Replacing the BDL box with a correct ADL box sorted out all these problems.

Frankly, I really don't see any weight savings. The ADL is a PITA to remove ctgs from your reciever, during the unloading process.

Good luck in your project.

2 of 3 rifles I hunt with are ADL

like said, you'll need an ADL mag box (you can use the same follower) and an ADL trigger guard
