I just got a Marlin GSBL in 45/70.

I want to use it for Deer Hunting.

Can anyone recommend me a good way to mount a scope and recommend a hunting scope under $1000

I have the exact same rifle its awesome !

I put the XS scout rail and a vortex scout scope on QD rings on mine. The scout scope is kinda different and takes a minute to get used to but for a 45-70 you REEEEAAAALLLLLYYYY don't want a normal scope anywhere near your eye :) I also put a skinner winged rear peep sight on mine too it just belongs there and with the QD scope rings I can easily go from one to the other whenever I want

+1 for XS scout rail, better yet with optional ghost ring sight at the back. Versatile and bomb-proof setup.
1-4x or 2.5x Leupold Scout scope. Hunting distances for 45-70 are rarely over 100m, especially in Ontario. I used exactly the same combination for years while living in TO.

mine came with the xs rail and i put a 6500 1.25-8x32 best scope on it. long eye relief. tried scout scopes and can t do it for me ... good luck in your choice and selection.

I have a 6-24 on my 1895 CB ...I don't have to get out of the chair to see bullet strikes on a target out to 200 yrds and when hunting with it ,I can pick 3 hairs out on the ribs & try to split the middle one.

A 4 X is sure adequate for hunting rifle most times but for the life of me....why limit the effectiveness a high powered scope can have on target identification and bullet placement. I have 3-9's on my .22's so I can see a gophers eye in the grass at 20 yrds and can never remember having to pass up a shot on game with 3-9's,4-12's and 6-24's from 30 yrds to extreme ranges...it has never happened...but I have passed up lots of shots when I only had a 4X on my rifle.

My scout scope and rail was perfect, with the ghost ring peep sight as well. I used a leupold 1.5-5 power IER scope, and QD rings. You can see the deer running, take aim with both your eyes open, and shoot or "meh" to get him to stop. Where I hunt the wide area of view is essential, and you need to be able to assess antler or antlerless quickly in very low light conditions.

I also cast a bunch of 310 grain bullets for my 444 Outfitter, over a light Unique load, and practiced quick shooing at pie plates etc at 70 yards. Great practice. Then I made a bunch of 260gr gold dot rounds of high muzzle velocity and never looked back.

Should never have sold the rifle, proper marlin with all of the stuff described set up for action. But it is out there somewhere being enjoyed, this week I bet.

I could never like a scout set up, the XS rail lets a 6 ounce 2.5X Leupold ultralight mount far enough ahead to use all 5" of eye relief.

I'm not a 'fan' of scout scope setups. Scopes with low magnification and a larger than average Field of View are on my 'big' bores. I like the 60ft plus, Field of View the Diamondback scopes have on my Marlins.

IMO, this is a close range firearm, where I hunt with the 45-70, my shots are 75yds or less.
I have a Vortex Diamondback 1.75-5*32 BDC on my 1895GBL 45-70. Scope, rings* & rail would be just over $500+tax.

IMO, the Diamondback has better specs for my use when compared to the aforementioned Leupold 2.5 Ultralight - FOV @ 39.5ft & Parallax set at 150yds, to the Vortex - FOV @ 68.3ft & Parallax set at 100yds.
Before someone squawks 'not enough eye relief', the Vortex has a 3.5" eye relief, I shoot some hefty loads -300gn HP Sierras over 55gn H4198 @ 2150fps, Hodgdon 2020 Annual Data - page 140 - 45-70 Lever Action's. The scope has not touched my prescription eye wear.

'If' I was buying again, for the extra FOV, I would put a Vortex Crossfire 1-4*24 V-Brite on the 1895GBL. It has a 30mm tube, uncluttered reticule, 96ft FOV, 4" eye relief and a 1.5MOA @4X red dot for low light conditions.

*Note, those steel rings are chewing up that aluminum base because of the heavy recoil. Got to change out the aluminum bases on my 'big' bores with steel ones this winter.

I agree about the scout scopes. I've moved away from them even though they are practical on a takedown rifle.

A used leupold vx-3 or vx-3i 1.5-5x20 from the EE should run you around 500$ and has good glass.

I've used the Vortex Diamondback 1.75-5*32 and for the price it's ok. My biggest gripe is that at its higher magnification ranges it loses a lot of clarity at the outer edges (portion would be a more adequate word) and has an almost 'fisheye'-like effect. At the lower magnification settings it's a good short range scope.

Good point about the rings. Easily overlooked. Fwiw I haven't had issues running aluminum rings (egw) on aluminum or steel pic rails on both my 450 Marlins and they have similar recoil levels.

This fall, I have left the fiber optic sights that come with my GSBL on there. I discovered that the longest shot I could take was inside 75 steps anyways. So No Worries!!

I love carrying this GSBL!!

Good luck with the search for an optic!!
