This is going to be a long post, sorry about that.

I posted this review on another forum and thought I should share it here as well.

I've read some good things about the Beretta PX4 compact, so I decided to give the full size PX4 a full review. I've read that The CBSA has not had a good track record with the PX4, but based on the positive reviews for the compact I thought I would test it myself.

I bought this gun used from this forum. It apparently only has 2500 rounds through it. Aside from the barrel and locking block, the wear to the rails and slide looks minimal, so I tend to think that it's close to that.

Thoughts:
1) Basically this gun is a polymer framed Beretta 92 (yeah, yeah, before you gun nerds go all "Rotating Barrel!" on me, just hear me out). The controls are very similar, the trigger feels much like the 92, the grip angle is the same, and it indexes virtually the same on the draw. So, if you are a Beretta 92 fan it will take you no time to get used to the PX4.

2) It's smaller in overall length than a Beretta Centurion and the grip length (from trigger guard to bottom of mag) is almost identical to the 92. The grip is thinner than the 92. The front and back grip serrations are awesome, but the side panels are slippery and have no gripping surface at all. I fixed that with skate tape.

The sight radius is just a little shorter than a Centurion.

The grip length and height, with mag inserted, is almost identical to the Centurion.

3) The safety ears are huge. I much prefer the 92's design, and the PX4 safety does not allow you to push the safety off by pushing down with the knuckle of your thumb.

4) It's got a dovetail front sight. If you are a 92 fan, you will understand why this is a nice treat. The rear sight on this gun has bright green inserts, while the front has a white dot. I blacked out the rear with a sharpie and will be using the white front sight until I can get a set of the Langdon Ameriglo's.

5) It's quite a bit lighter than the 92 series guns. Listed weight is between 32 and 34 oz for 92's and the full size PX4 is 27.7oz.The slide fully covers the barrel. The design of the safety and the Bruniton finish coupled with the front and rear cocking serrations make the gun easy to rack. The safety ears are angled up and I had no worries that grasping the slide would engage the safety when it was configured as the "F" model. The Bruniton finish is a little tacky in feel, and it's not slippery, like a Glock.

6) It's user convertible to a G model pistol, which means the safety can be converted to a decocker only. You simply remove the safety, pop out a ball detente and spring and reassemble. Easy.

7) The gun is super easy to disassemble. You don't have to pull the trigger and there is no lever to get in the way of your grip. Simply push down on the two tabs in the frame and the slide comes right off.

8) The mags are very similar to 92 series mags but they are not interchangeable. They fit in my 92 specific mag holders but they were very tight, even when backing off the retention screw. The front of the mags are square, much like factory 92 mags, which sucks for reloads. I wish Mec Gar made PX4 mags with tapered top metal like they do for the 92 series.

9) The mag well on the gun is small, like most 92's, which is not conducive to fast reloads, but I was able to do a few sub second reloads in dry practice when I hit the mag well just right. This gun is going to have a really beat to hell mag well once I am finished with it.

10) I noticed the frame has very tiny metal insert frame rails, and no frame mounted locking block. Interesting. I noticed some barrel movement when the gun is in battery, much like you get with the 92 series.

So that's it for now. Pistol is lubed with Lucas red "n" tacky and I hope to get to the range as soon as I receive my registration papers. 2000 round challenge starts now.

Just finished converting my PX4 to a "G" model. I followed these instructions:

https://youtu.be/GWc6i506oEQ

It went fairly well, though it took much longer than the video. I recommend you buy a proper punch set. I only had a partial set and I needed more sizes. If you try this, use slave pins where you can when reinserting the pins. The extractor is very hard to depress while putting the extractor pin back in, and a slave pin would have made it much easier to complete. As with anything, the proper tools make life so much easier. Anyway, flop sweats and many four letter words later, I have a G model. I decocked the gun dozens of times aterwards and it seems to work well.

Pic of the parts you need to take out of the gun:

These are the two little parts that keep the "F" model from being a "G"; detente ball and spring.

Also, I received my Blade-Tech OWB holster. Works well.

I was finally able to get to the range today and put some rounds through the full size PX4. Gear was An OWB Blade-Tech holster and competition belt and Blackhawk mag pouches.

Ammunition: 70x124g AE, 250x147g AE, 150X124g Centaure remanufactured.
Total rounds fired: 470
Stoppages:1
Malfunctions: 0
Breakages: 0

Overall Impressions:

I liked this gun! It shot very flat and though it was my first time shooting it, I shot it almost as well as my Elite II. The G conversion I did worked perfectly. I didn't feel at a disadvantage with the trigger, and it was easy to swing around and manipulate.

Best Drills of the day:

El Prez (USPSA ): 7.04 clean
Bill Drill: 2.41 clean (I shot a 2.25 with a close C as well)
Draw and 2 on a 3X5 (7 yards): 2.03 clean
FTS (7yards): 2.21 clean
B8 at 25 yards: 87-2X (more about this below)

I wanted to put more than 300 rounds through the gun as I have read that 300ish rounds was a witnessed number at which full sized PX4's locked up and needed a rubbber mallet to unlock. I had no such issues.

The one issue I did have was with a stuck follower on one of the magazines. I was just finished shooting a low round count drill and I noticed the gun was rattling. I popped the mag and noticed the rounds were lose in the mag and that the gun had failed to feed a new round as a result. I shook the rounds out, pulled off the mag plate and there was quite a bit of grit in that particular mag. I shook out the mag and then reassembled it, I had not further problems. I hadn't cleaned the mags before starting the test, which I should have done since the gun and mags were used. I'll clean them and continue with the test. It's a shame, because the gun was working great otherwise.

I shot about 4 inches high for me at 25 yards. I had to split the black of the B8 with the front sight to get any type of decent score at all. One of the targets I shot had 5 rounds through one small cluster........but in the 7 ring. The front sight is a bit wide for 25 yard group shooting.

Fastest split I was able to get with the gun was .18. I think I can do better with a bit more time on the gun. It tracked well and the sights popped right back into place at speed. I tended to push a few shots high when going fast.

So far, so good! I have some video which I hope to get posted soon.

2nd range session:

I put another 250 rounds through my PX4 today. Gear was Blade-Tech Holster and belt, Blackhawk mag pouches. For the FASTest's I used a stupid looking vest for concealment.

Ammunition: 200 X 124g Wartac Remanufactured + 50 X 124g AE
Total rounds fired: 720
Stoppages:2
Malfunctions: 0
Breakages: 0

I had another magazine induced failure to feed. Same mag and same issue as last time. It was my fault for using it again; I noiced the mag rattling with loose rounds and decided to try it anyway. The follower got stuck and caused the stoppage. I cleaned my mags beforehand too. I may have to bin that mag and just use it for dry practice.

I have to say that I am really liking the PX4! Mag issue aside, I am shooting this gun as good as my Elite II (which is a little shocking actually). It shoots very flat, and the G conversion is perfect. The sight paint I used provides a great Hi-Viz sight picture.

Here's a quick video of the best drills of today. The FAST was the third and last FAST of the day.

Thanks for that. Great review. I am a huge 92 fan and now a huge PX4 fan. I can't believe what a smooth and accurate shooter mine is. I almost had to sell her but thankfully avoided that tragedy.

I personally like the safety/decocker of the 92 so I'm not interested in pursuing the decocker mod but I am on the hunt for the 92-style replacement safety levers. But that said I can live with the factory "wings."

Now all I need is someone to respond to my EE post and put a large backstrap on so it fits my mutant hands!

I'm also considering aftermarket sights for mine too so I would be interested to hear what others have replaced theirs with.

Happy shooting!

Some side notes - the tritium rear sight you have is not on all guns. Mine came with simple white dots, but the .40 slide (which fits on the same frame) has the tritium rear. (still hoping someone would test fit a .45 slide onto the 9mm frame)

Also CBSA uses a version with no decocker/safety lever - there is no opening machined for it at all. I've now had several CBSA folks ask me how I like it after they saw my registration at the border, but I always have to tell them that I have a different version that behaves a little different :)

Quick update:

Total rounds fired: 1220

The gun continues to work great. I'm not happy that I have not got more rounds through it, but the normally decent weather here has conspired to keep me off our high elevation range.

I installed the PX4 target sights. I'm liking them so far, and the thinner front sight is helpful.

The mag well is getting a bit of abuse from dry practice.

Great review. thanks. The PX4 has never generated much love from me I have to admit. I also would have to say the gun us really butt ugly IMHO. All of that said, you can't ignore performance of the gun. I have pretty much made up my mind that after acquiring a 92A1 recently and have committed myself to a SIG 320 Optic when they arrive, my handgun purchases will finally come to an end. Keeo up the well written review and please consider doing one on the 92A1. You have the skill.

Take Care

The terrible PX4 is crap. Why Beretta stuck with this lemon is a mystery. Beretta even makes this junk for the CCW market in short frames.
The rotating barrel lockup is not better than a basic 1911, I mentioned that it is ugly, it's a prohibited class firearm except for the retro fit 4.2" barrel and it's expensive.
And virtually no one uses it for competition as there are so many other better 9mm's in the market cheaper. And better! Even the totally obnoxious XD line of pistols are better. Okay, not really, they are about even in guns most knowledgeable gun owners avoid....

Thanks Bob! I got really deep into testing on a Beretta Elite II (still my primary competition gun) and have done quite a bit of testing on a 92D and a Girsan clone. My Elite II is an awesome shooter and is very well suited to IPSC. I bought the PX4 as more of a diversion than anything, but damn if I didn't take a real liking to the gun. I now shoot it as good or better than my Elite II. The only thing I feel like I give up with the PX4 is sight radius and a magwell bevel. Time will tell how well I can do with the PX4, but I intend on shooting it in at least my first IPSC club match of this season.

Can't decide if this is a troll or if the dude is being serious.

I really don't care if you like the gun or not. I'm just interested in sharing my experiences with the gun, good or bad, with the forum. If you have any firm data to back up your statements above. Please share them.

Most knowledgeable gun owners avoid them? Well, you are correct that some very knowledgeable gun owners have had less than flattering things to say about the PX4. I also know of several accomplished shooters that love the PX4. I decided to find out for myself. Results posted above. Take it or leave it dude. I don't care.

Thanks for the posts Clobbersauras. As a Beretta fanboy I have been tempted to buy a PX4 for a long time now. Don't know whats stopping me. I will probaly get a PX4 right after I get the APX that should be available very soon according to Stoeger Canada.

Yes i appreciate the review. I really like this gun. I was considering the .45 someday.
As for the troll's comment : wow! Totally weird. Dude should be separated from contact with anyone, so he can do a bit of soul searching

Great review!! I also picked one up from a CGNer (THANK YOU!!) and I absolutely love it. I've put only 300 rounds through it as the I am a wuss when it comes to the cold, and I didn't want to stay at the range for very long, haha. The previous owner had about 1000+ rounds though it so she's seen some stuff. I had zero issues with the ammo (sorry, I forget what I had, it was cheap stuff), so zero stoppages. Great. I switched from a striker fire to a DA/SA so it has taken me a little while to get used to it but I really enjoy the trigger as it is super smooth, especially compared to my Glock. Would I recommend this gun to my friends? Yes, definitively. But then again, not everyone will go for it and that's fine. Hatman1793, what can I say man, if you don't like yours, give it to me. I'll give it a good home.

I had two stoppages with the PX4 today, both were caused by the user. The first was a failure to feed brought on by a failed speed reload where I didn't get the mag fully inserted into the gun. The slide stripped off a round, but the extractor didn't pick it up and it got stuck to the left of the feed ramp. The other was a failure of the slide to lock on an empty mag, caused by improper grip when I was shooting SHO.

I ran a bunch of different drills today, it was cold and snow was starting to fall. I had a slight range delay when our moron range Llama (yes an actual Llama) thought it would be a great idea to eat the vegetation on the back of the berm at my bay. I can't decide if he's just not too bright or if he just doesn't give a f@ck.

Results from some drills:

Bills: 2.33 Clean, 2.24 Clean, 2.22 (1C)
FAST (1st Cold have not shot in two weeks): 5.90 +1H = 6.90 sec (competition gear under a winter jacket).
25 yard B8's: 91-2X, 92-2X
4 Aces: 3.44 (2C), 4.08 (1C) - mangled the reload.

Thanks for the effort on the review. I've heard that CBSA has had some problems but many of them were mag issues. I think there were gun problems too but may have been some quality control issues.
Wonder if anyone from CBSA could enlighten us. I know they struggle with a heavy trigger pull, but that is what they are issued and doesn't apply to what is available commercially.

Some guns get a bad rap and don't get the credit they deserve.

Thank you for the review and report of the PX4. IMHO I think is a beautiful handgun. But did you find the gun sits kind of high when you aim? What I mean is that I feel that the rail is kind of tall. Have you noticed anything like that?

I think the height over bore issue is a bunch of marketing hype. I can shoot spits as fast or faster with my PX4 than any of the "low bore axis" guns I have owned or tried. I believe if you apply the proper fundamentals that the low height over bore designs just don't provide a tangible advantage, at least not on the timer.

There are other things, like trigger reset and recoil spring weights that you can squeeze more juice from if you want to shoot faster. It's more important to me that the sights move straight up and down and as fast as possible, than the overall recoil impulse of the gun. I shoot factory springs in my gun, and I don't see much to gain by messing with it. Also, the recoil impulse of the PX4 is different than other guns due to the rotating barrel and I find it shoots pretty flat for a smaller gun.

Regarding PX4 mags; they come from the factory coated with some sort of semi-sticky grease. I degreased my original five mags and I've had no further issues with stuck followers. I just purchased a brand new mag and the difference between it and the degreased mags is very noticeable.

Why they are coated that way is beyond me.
