Came back from the range,
My hammer won't always hit the primer dead center, it strikes it far on the right or left side, not igniting the primer. In 2 boxes I had 8 rounds that did not fire, its punching so far to the side that it bends the primer almost out of the casing. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I knew a couple of shooting friends years ago who had Pythons.
Both of them really liked the guns but both guns had to have the timing on the cylinders redone. Seems like a Python problem.

But they still are great guns.

Does the cylinder have "end shake"? If its bad enough, the hand will not be able to turn the cylinder far enough hence your timing issues.

I don't know much about Colt Pythons but the usual fix is to do some machining and screw the barrel in an additional turn. Standard work for a good revolversmith.

I'm not sure Colt has any factory reps left in Canada. On another note, why do US gun companies put their repair/warranty facilities in the most un-gun friendly province in the whole country? Everytime I've had to deal with Ruger and get referred to their folks in QC, it's like pulling chicken teeth to get anything done. It would be easier to send stuff south of the border, I swear to god. - dan

I would suggest to go to the Coltforum to see what they have to say. There are a few very knowlegable folk there.

There are precious few gunsmiths who know their way around a colt, even in the states there are only a handful.Colts have a reputation of being difficult to work with and parts are also an issue.Probably best to research this before sending your gun to the local smith.

Pythons do have a reputation for going out of time in comparison to smiths and rugers.Ive had 3 pythons over the past few years, and although they are really great guns to shoot ,I limit the amount of rounds I put through them, and then I never shoot magnum loads through them either. If I want to do volumr shooting,I take my smith and wessons out

Good luck sorting this out!

I still have a couple of Pythons, and I find they outlast (and have way better actions) then the K frame S&Ws (I have a few of those as well). On the other hand, I think the L frame is a slightly sturdier gun, and an N frame most definitely is, so there you go. The analogy of a finely made instrument vs. a mass manufactured tool is interesting, but I think exaggerated a bit. The Python has a lot of hand fitting involved in it's assembly and timing, whereas the S&Ws don't (not for quite a few years anyway). It's one of the reasons that Colt started making the Trooper Mk III, and the Mk V (which in turn became the King Cobra and, slightly upsized, the Anaconda). So while the Python starts out better fitted and a nicer action, once it has seen wear, your average gun mechanic isn't going to be fixing it. FWIW - dan
