How many of you guys who put out the big bucks for a Colt Python actually shoot your guns? Or do they become 'safe queens', occasionally pulled out to be handled and admired?

If you do shoot them, what style and type of shooting? Anything from the leather? Target wadcutters or .... ?

I don't own one but I daresay your guess about being safe queens is probably right, considering that they are expensive and not made anymore.
Having said that, there will always be someone who will say their gun is a tool and will be used as one and da*n the scratches and nicks. The truth about this is they can still probably sell the gun with minimum loss on the market price since...they don't make ém anymore!

Back in the days when Pythons were still common, most people I know only target shoot with them, using wadcutter .38Spl ammo, esp. the 6" and longer models. We had the 2.5" and 4" ones commonly then also and they were holstered more.

Safe queens for me mainly cause I don't shoot as much anymore but 15 years ago I had a Python and Anaconda and they were both excellent shooters. I used them mostly for bullseye shooting at 25 yards and they didn't disappoint.

Mine from the 1980's is owned by my father, so I'm going to liberate it soon. After a check up by the gunsmith, I'm taking it to the range. Used to be super accurate with Semi Wadcutters, and just about anything else.FullSizeRender (28).jpg

I suspect most Pythons are in the "investment" class. Like Shiloh rifles, they keep their values, even if used, but well maintained.

Mine were 12(6) so not big bucks but when I owned Pythons I had two. A looker and a shooter. Mostly shot .38 SPL +P with some .357. Sold both because I prefer S&W K-frames. Don't miss them at all.

I compete in PPC in the early 80's with a 6" Python, Nytex finish, original rear sight cut in two, kept the part screwed to the frame and welded to it half an Elliason (blade part) to get a flat sight picture.
Main spring filed in width and polished, made to measure goncalo alves with rosewood insert Hogue monogrip.
Sweet revolver....sold for $750.00 in 1985.....a lot of money back then.

I shoot mine. It's not exactly mint and had seen many rounds before I got it. I don't shoot it every time I got to range but a few times a year. Only 38 special now though. No more magnum loads. It is so smooth it would be a crime to not shoot it.

I'm glad to hear that some regard their Pythons as guns to be shot and enjoyed. I can't justify having a gun that I don't shoot.

Nighthawk is importing a line of Korth revolvers for the US market. Prices range from $1699 to $4799 USD, depending upon the model and features. From the artcle in a current magazine, they are going to outclass the Pythons in many respects.

I shot all my Pythons. My current blued '79 gets a workout with everything from WC's, +P's and full Magnums. Holstered in a Safariland Sam Browne belt and a good ol' right handed 11A swivel basket weave leather holster. Mainly shooting rapid drills in double action at 40 meters on 6" and 8" gongs and sometimes will bring out it's full potential in SA at 25 meters slow firing. It's pretty accurate and looks good while doing it but I'm still a S&W guy!

Bought mine used in the mid 90's. Previous owner used it for IPSC type shooting so the end of the barrel was a bit worn from the leather. I bought it to shoot and if I would have found a 586 used at a decent price first I would have bought it as I was just looking for a .357 wheel gun. I got a whole bunch of old Dominion 38 spl brass with it that I have loaded with target loads that I could not even guess how many times and they still work although split cases are becoming more common. I also shot a few hundred full load .357 through it on an outside range and enjoyed it but it can be found offensive on my present indoor range.
I bought the gun to shoot and have never thought of selling it.
So yes some Python owners are not afraid to shoot them.

I started to get an interest for the Python after the Walking dead show came out. I figured I would buy one......YAH Right,..$3000+ Yikes ! I like the gun,..but ........ So I bought a Taraus Model 608 357mag for $600 , and I love it. Mabey I'll buy a Replica off Ebay for $29 bucks,..then I can leave it sitting out in the open , then every one can enjoy it 24/7. Nice gun for sure.

Got mine in 1991. Shot a lot of 38 and 357 but now I only shoot 38 Pic is after a day at the range Just wanted to show what they look like dirty
