Python vs Anaconda

Python is based on the old Colt 41 frame (the I frame) with the leaf spring action, all forged steel parts. Anaconda is based on the newer Mk V frame (made slightly larger) coil spring design, some cast parts. Python is a much smoother action, and a smaller revolver.

586/686 are the same revolver, an L frame S&W. One is stainless and the other is blued steel. The L frame came about because once police departments started using full power magnum loads in thier qualification shoots instead of 38 Special HBWCs, they noticed the S&W's didn't last very long, they started to "shoot loose". So they strengthened/made larger the frame and redesigned the action. Good revolvers, not as smooth as a Python out of the box, but half the cost typically. FWIW - dan

Python is a much sleeker (not to mention much prettier) revolver than Anaconda and King Cobra. Python is based on older design, uses better materials and is much more expensive to manufacture, requiring a lot of hand fitting.

I currently own and shoot an Anaconda. and while not the slimmest of revolvers out there it does do what colt designed it to do, shoot big .44 rounds into things all day long and with a fair bit of accuracy. my favorite trick is shaming guys on the rifle range who miss the 100 yard gong with their longuns. Considering i picked it up for 640 bucks, id say I got a fair deal. 2 Complaints, 1 it is a pig, its heavy, its huge and its not friendly to people that dont know how to handle it, 2 the handgrips should be replaced as soon as you get your hands on it, the seam on the back can form a pinch point and bruise up your thumb pretty good. good set of rubbers from hogue and i love it

if you can get one do it, if you cant, envy those of us lucky enough to have one

The Python is a very expensive, over rated, .357 mag revolver. Mind you, it's the only factory revolver that doesn't need a trigger job out of the box.
The Anaconda is/was Colt's .44 mag revolver.
