Python vs King Cobra

There's a reason the KC is cheaper. the Python is hand finished and assembled, different barrel profile and far nicer trigger. Plus it's a Python!

What is the difference between these two revolvers? The King Cobra seems to be cheaper in general.

It is. Coil spring lockworks, designed for cheaper/easier manufacturing (basically a refined version of the Mk III lockworks). Some cast metal parts (hammer, for example), etc. It was designed as a price competitor with the S&W 586/686, which were the defacto police guns of the day, and the market they were aiming for (hence the efforts to bring the costs down). Pythons are handfitted, leaf spring actions, smoother DA, crisper triggers, an all around better gun. A lot more money though. Not that the KC/MkIII/586/686 etc and such are bad guns, they are perfectly servicable DA revolvers. - dan

Trying to compare the two is like trying to compare a pick-up truck to a sports car.....a Ford F-150 to a Mustang. They are made by the same company but the comparison ends there.

Both guns are fine. The care taken with the Pythons was much greater than that taken with the King Cobra, plus the internals are different. Just for grins, here's a photo of my 40 year old Python, bought NIB in `65:

Python2.jpg

It was my duty gun from `65 to `85. After 20 years of daily holster wear, it needed re-blueing, so a buddy did it for me. The grips are Mustangs but I still have the originals. The line visible from the frame window to the grip is a reflection, not an imperfection.

John

PS: I feel sorry for you guys in the frozen north who have trouble getting these. I didn't post the photo to rub it in.........well, maybe just a little :).

Geez, I actually have a Ford F-150 and a Mustang [well actually 3 Mustangs, but who's counting...] and I like 'em all... :p

I've got 12(6) on my PAL, too, so [legally] getting a 4" Colt Python is no biggie either...:D

But yours is indeed a beaut, sir... ;)

Last time I saw a 4" Python on an AZ copper, his name was John Wintergreen!

For all you Electra Glide in Blue fans. However, that gun had a nickeled barrel and cylinder with a blued frame.

tobin,

No comment about that movie other than it was awful. The guy that came up with that prop gun was a Philistine. He should be taken out and whipped.

I never rode a motor. My parents passed on some common sense to me. All motor cops are insane, even my good friends who rode them.

Twenty years in & never rode a motor? Man, you really missed out, huh? ;) :p

NAA,

My total time was more than 30 years. During that time, I never had the desire to ride a police motor. I almost bought one in `73/`74 but common sense took over and I passed.

NAA,

I never missed anything by not working on a crotch rocket, except for broken bones, contusions, scrapes, etc. Every motor cop that I know has been hurt and made at least one trip to the hospital. You don't have to be crazy to be a motor cop but it sure makes the job easier.

I was unable to be assigned to motors because I knew both my parents. :)

John

PS: I got your PM and replied. Be careful out there.
