Pythons - made of gold?

All unfired pristine examples, plenty of VG-EX on the auction sites for $2k-$2500
I looked there too, why not link to the cheaper ones?

$2K to $2500 for blue maybe, not stainless! There are cheaper ones here too but clean or rare go for more. I'd pay $4K plus any day of the week for a BSTS 6" with matching serial numbered box...........try and find one

On the other hand if you have 12-x you can pick up a snub Python for a song. So now you can thank your government for a gift ; )

I seriously regret the day I sold my last shorty. I've been in it since 1983 and happened not to have any short ones left when they changed the law.

PS: If the day ever comes that they get rid of the 12.X BS , there will be a lot of happy campers out there....... right bigi?? ;)

I am thinking of spending $3-4K for a nickel python.
I love the nostalgia of quality old stuff, i like the look of it, and rick grimes is awesome.
NIB, i'd spend more.

Dont be pissed because someone is willing to spend more then you are for a nice piece in demand.

One just popped up in the EE for substantially cheaper than what we've been discussing here. Don't know the seller at all but I would say it would not last long.

Prices sky-rocketed after "the walking dead" came out. For real..

My pony aint for sale but somedays it is tempting..

That's interesting. apparently the same thing happened with the smith model 29 after dirty harry came out.

I bet most of them never get shot which is a damn shame.

Funny thing about the box isn't it? Seems like here in Canada we seldom have matching boxes left with older guns. In the US they place almost the same amount of importance on the packaging as they do the hardware ....

That's another thing - why do most sellers take the asking price off as soon as they sell the piece? I want to know the going asking prices even if it's not the final selling price :(

The box is especially important when it comes to the bright stainless since so many brushed stainless get polished after the fact and get passed off as the higher priced bright stainless
When you have the original serial numbered box that is marked BSTS, there is no doubt that it's original from the factory. Otherwise, the only way to know for sure is to get an archive letter done by Colt which runs $175 for an expedited letter (2 weeks) and who wants to buy a gun without a box, then get a letter done and find out it left the factory as a brushed finish??

I agree the 6 inch Royal blued Python is probably the ###iest revolver around, so much so that almost everyone has a copy of the ventilated rib on their revolver BUT I would rather shoot a 5/686 anytime over the Python. The first time I shot a Python, I was waiting for the heavens to open up and angels to start singing, what with all the mystique of the gun. It was kinda meh! Good SA trigger pull but nothing I've never seen before but the stacking DA pull really sucks! In comparison, the S&W DA pull is lighter and way more predictable. Even if I could afford a Python now, I would rather buy a S&W and a Ruger and use the change for ammo!

I think buddy was asking $2800 for it. Still not chump change but less stratospheric than the others.

Don't know what all the fuss is about. I owned 2 of them in the 80's and 90's and they were alright but hell, they were not made out of gold. As someone said only on the EE.

Lots of "fake " boxes too! people find NOS boxes and print new labels and suddenly thay have a NIB python!

If I had the cash, I'd have one in a city second. I don't begrudge anyone who has the means to get one. Happily jealous for them. Just because I don't have the scratch, I am still happy for them. They are like "dream guns" and oftentimes, people make big sacrifices in order to get one. Good on them.

There was a time when I might have agreed. I love my S&W, currently have 9 very nice examples including a 686 Talo. Of them all, my Model 14 K38 Masterpiece is the very best of the bunch for shooting. The action was tuned by somebody at some point who knew what they were doing, double action is amazing and single is like breaking a thin piece of crystal. Amazing shooter. Then, this past weekend I finally shot a Python that I bought to shoot (I have a number that are not going to be shot by me). The one I purchased to shoot is a 1980 manufacture, and was ordered with Elliason rear and Patridge front sight, and tuned from the Colt Custom shop. I have the box and paperwork, and history on it. I am the 3rd owner. The previous owner shot Bullseye with it, and says he put thousands of rounds of cast .38 sp through it. After taking it out on the weekend and putting a half box of .38, and a couple cylinders of .357 through it (before it started raining), I can only say that in both double and single action it is quite a bit better than the K38. Your mileage may vary, but even a well tuned Smith is not the same as a Python in my opinion.

Having said that, I still love shooting my Smiths, and will keep buying every fine example I can find and afford. The way prices have been going, I think I am done buying Colts for now, as I just can't bring myself to spend that kind of money, when I can buy 3 nice S&W for the same price. Unless my bright stainless Python Unicorn shows up, which I must have.

Just to jump in here, one thing I've noticed in my 2.5 years on the forum is it seems like 80% of the WTS ads for Python's are from new members with 0 or very low trader rating, I've always found this suspicious.
