The Tobin 1915 Simplex guns catalogue #311 shows a part called a cam link [part #13]
What does it do? Is it necessary for the operation of the gun?
I have some different actions and parts and some of them have the holes drilled for the little pin to fit into and others do not have those holes. One end fits into the cocking cam [part # 17].
Reason for asking: I have a gun that has the 2 holes and have the 2 cam links but cannot get them to fit into place..........NO! I did not take the action apart; it was in pieces when I aquired it. Thanks for any assistance.
 
I'm not sure I can help you answer the question as to what is the specific purpose of the cam link, but here are a couple pictures of the internals of my various Tobins.

Top is a 12ga model 40 field grade. Bottom is a 16ga black diamond. They look exactly the same to me.

This is the 12ga Tobin "Crandall". Its a whole different animal...
 
Thank you kindly Steve. Great pictures and the top 2 are exactly what I am dealing with. I got both the cam links into position; had to remove the hammer to take the pressure off the main spring and then they went in fairly easily. I discovered that the actions that do NOT have the square hole in the bottom do not have the holes drilled in them for the cam link pins. It would be nice to see a picture of the internals of one of them if someone has one and feels like pulling a side plate at some time.
And the Crandall gun sure is a different animal. First time I have seen inside one of them, a great learning opportunity so thank you again for taking the time to post that picture.
Think I'm getting close to having this one of mine ready to go, just need to find an extractor and get the trigger mechanism installed.
