Q: Will a Bushnell 4-9x40 last on a .300 Win Mag?

I had an older Bushnell Banner 3-9x38mm on my first .300 Win Mag [a Ruger tangsafety]. It never failed me & was a fairly good scope, I thought.

My current .300 Win Mag started out with a B&L Elite 3000 3-9x40mm on it. A much better scope. I then upgraded it to a B&L Elite 4000 3.5-10x40mm [forrunner of the Bushnell 4200 series].

Minimum Bushnell I'd put on a rifle now is a Trophy series , but would prefer a 3200 or above. Or a Leupold VX-II................. ;)

my .300WM started with the sportsmen 3-9x40 got 2 rounds out before the guts started rattling around, then to a tasco 6-24x42, i put about 200 rounds down the pipe with that one before ti wouldnt hold zero and now it wears the falcon menace 4-14ffp hopiong it will last much longer then the first 2

bushnell trouble

i got 2 -3200's and 2 4200's of the four all have been replaced by bushnell warranty ,375 ultra mag ate two 4200's within 50 rounds.saving up for a luepold now,,300 ultra killed 3200 in about 100 rds,,and 7mm ultra lasted alittle longer maybe 200rds..will not be looking for anymore bushjunk scopes,no problems with there warranty except a little slow,,but no questions asked..:sniper::sniper::eek::eek:

Leupold VXIII's look the best for my wife and I with our horribly bad eyesight. Can't beat the eye relief either, it's great knowing you'll never clock yourself.

For plinkers like .223 we don't mind the shorter eye relief of the Bushnell 4200/Burris Fullfield II's, lots of light and clear.

I've had a 4-12x Banner on my .300 Winchester Magnum for almost a decade now, and it's never given any problems (knock on wood).

I shoot this rifle and scope REGULARLY at small targets at 300 yards with no problems. In my opinion, for most hunting a 3-9 is fine. On a heavier "Sendero" type rifle, a 4-12 doesn't hurt. Personally, I'd probably never go with any higher magnification on a scope I intended to use for hunting.

My current long range hunting rifle is a Sako .300 Winchester Magnum with a carefully crafted handload. It wears a Nikon Monarch 3.3-10x with a mildot. I am a fairly practised long range shooter (I shot in the World Championship last year in Ottawa) and I use a Leica rangefinder. I would not hesitate to use this combo at half a kilometer, if I had to. This is not something that I would recommend, unless you have the experience and the equipment to pull it off. One thing you do NOT need, however, is a scope any higher than 10 to 12x.
