Quality Dog Food

we lost our border collie to bladder and prostate cancer. he was 8. we fed him food that was 60 dollars a bag and we thought it was " the good stuff". now our remaining 3 get ALOT of home cooked meals instead. ive always wondered if it was the food he was fed. the vet told us that bladder cancer is not alot more common in dogs. he was like a child to us.

My ex's cattle dog was obese and became diabetic. She put him on a homemade diabetic diet, which he loves, and the last I heard he is healthier than ever. The concoction that she was making was the cheapest meat (beef, pork, chicken, fish) available, cooked so that it would last longer in a pot in the fridge. This was mixed with a little cooked rolled oats, some vegetable oil, hard boiled egg and some ground kelp.

My buddy feeds his kennel of bear hounds (Plotts and Blue Ticks) raw ground meat. He gets it in frozen bricks from a supplier in Quebec. His hounds are in incredible condition and they never get plaque build up on their teeth from too much carb based food.

We feed Corey ProSeries Performance. Fish-based protein and lots of it, made in Canada, and reasonably priced (relative to competitive brands). We tried Orijen for a bit but the gas was horrendous and the poop was as black as tar.

We've feed all our working dogs Pro Plan (plus supplements depending on the dog). There are FAR too many environmental conditions to simply blame an increase in cancer related mortality on dog food.

My dog had the following for dinner tonight...

All left overs... :D

vegetarian corn dog
vegetarian bbq skewers (looks/tastes like beef)
white rice
peas
potato salad
roast chicken

Last night was her dog food (can't remember what it is called) with a very healthy portion of sockeye salmon...

Inukshuk "performance", by Corey foods is the best dry food I've found so far for my huskies. 32% protein, 32% fat makes it pretty power-packed stuff, so I don't have to feed,(or scoop) as much as other foods. Also, its Canadian made, with good quality ingredients(chicken, fish, whole wheat and rice).

Apparently its also made with "human grade" ingredients, though I haven't had to test it myself yet.

both of my dogs get acana grain free food and i switch between the pacifica and grasslands to mix it up for them. $70 for 30lbs, but it lasts 3-4 weeks. my lab only gets 1 standard coffee mug in the morning and another in the evening while the beagle/walker hound cross gets half that.

if i were feeding them cheap crap they'd need to eat twice as much food because the cheap stuff is half filler.

you get a free bag of food for every 10 bags purchased. ;)

science diet is all my springer eats

We feed our dogs Costco brand dog food. It seems to be the best thing that we have found for them. I have 3 hounds that had bad ear infections from sience diet and eukinuba and such. So far they have been on this food for 3 years and have been good since.

My Black Lab developed a skin allergy. After testing we found out he was allergic to gluten. After a lot of research we switched to "First Mate" Fish formula. It is made in Chilliwack BC. and is made from sweet potatoes, fish, and other good stuff. They make other types as well. Chicken, Lamb etc. His skin cleared up and No More Toxic Farts. I have been looking at the BARF diet but my Wife is not to wild about the idea. Most likely because she would get stuck making it. ;) http://www.canadasguidetodogs.com/health/nutritionarticle14.htm

if youre at all concerned about the $#!T that your dog is eating they why not make your own dog food, theres plenty of hippie induced dog food recipies on the net to choose from
ive never seen a dog that didnt like a bowl of rice with a lil veggies and a good chunk of meat in it, even picky eaters will devour every last speck and ask for more

My spaniel was getting ear infections. After the third different vet said “It could be a food allergy” I decided to research dog food a bit.

It was not pretty. There are chemicals allowed in commercial dog food and other stuff I will not mention. “No preservatives” means the dog food manufacturer did not add any, but does not mean that the stuff they buy to put in the food does not have preservatives. It is the chemicals that cause cancer and infections.

As it happens, the web sites that conduct analysis of dog food and make recommendations are mostly American. I have made a point of buying a couple big bags of top-rated American dog food any time I happen to cross the border. A good pet food store has several of the top-rated brands.

I am providing two web sites. One explains how bad the food can be, and why. The other is a site that lists dog food as 3 star, 4 star, 5, star and now a few are 6 star. I have been buying 5 star and today found 6 star at Global Pet Foods near Toronto.

Thanks for this, its something I've been after for quite some time. My dog food of choice was Professional Lamb and Rice and I believed it to be a top quality food, but I see it only makes 3 stars, so thats going to change.

Over here we have been trying the barf diet (bones and raw food) for about 10 years. I still feed mine a complete dry food (9 spaniels) but the Barf is an occaisional treat. I do use non vet solutions to health problems, I worm them with pills but I de flea them with a teaspoon of horse garlic powder on their food every dayy or two in spring for about 2-3 weeks. Works a treat.

Now my whole family feeds their dogs Canidae, seems pretty good except all the dogs fart pretty badly. My rottie x shepherd just let one go under my desk, I'm abandoning ship!

My dog was eating Canidae grain free for the first two years, but I have switched over to Taste of the Wild for the last year. The farts are still there but much more bearable the with the Canidae. (Purebred Doberman)

The general feeling on other forums I belong to towards dogfoodanalysis.com is one of disdain.
