The one and only Simmons I seen work worth a damn was a Japanese variant from the late 1990s. A variable scope in the Whitetail series. A friend had it mounted on an inline Gonic magnum.
I understand optics companies with zero scruples would initially pay for decent quality off a production line overseas.
After a few years with good or better reviews the executives would drop quality, henceforth pay less for factory production and pocket the difference for themselves.
Meanwhile unwitting consumers are hoodwinked out of thier money, by purchasing overpriced junk that had good or very good reviews two years ago.
It's the effing shareholders fault !
Edit: I once had a Simmons 4x. The optical quality was dismal so I don't own it anymore. It could withstand 30-06 recoil just fine but this scope tended to give you headaches from optical eye strain.

There has to be a Chinese manufacturer that makes scopes to the level of Japanese and American manufacturers. I wonder if it’s just a matter of people being unwilling to shill out the cash for a made in China product. I’ve been there for sure, considered a ~700 hawke scope and ~500 dollar primary arms optic but pass every time for euro/American scopes
Maybe we will see a turn around in popular perception and manufacturing quality of high end stuff like recently occurred with technical gear. Vortex is certainly a very popular brand.

An old 'Scope Chief' fixed 4X scope is a decent scope if you can get one at a fair price. Much better image quality than any USA made Weaver. The Weaver 'K's made in Japan were pretty good scopes in that price range. Much more expensive but a lot nicer are the fixed 4x Swarovski and Zeiss. Nickel made a nice (but heavy!) steel tubed fixed 4x
My thought too.
Mind eye problems and too short eye relief make me turn more and more to Belomo or NPZ for POSP and PSO. Also some surplus Bundeswehr Zf 4x24 as well.

I picked up a 4x Japanese Tasco to put on a single-shot bush rifle and it works great. They have nice glass and are reasonably bright in low light. You can't go too wrong with one of these and they don't cost much!

Karl Kaps scopes out of Germany. You can buy them on line from Slovenia, from Optics Trade. Importation is painless. I have three Kaps scopes, they are very very well made and although premium quality, are about half the cost of other alpha Euro scopes. My 4x has been used for several years on three different rifles and hundreds of rounds of .375 H&H and 8x57IS and 7x64. Never had the first hiccup, it just works.
I think 98% of my big game hunting could be done with a 4x,if I think about it that is were I usually set and leave if I'm brush walking,and 6x at cruising the river or lowland tundra.but I like more power because,well it's more power lol.actually I have never took anything above a 3x9 hunting.
Just got a red dot and mount from them and another scope on the way. Do you pay the 100 dollar hassle free shipping option or take your chances with customs? Definitely learned not to use fedex internationally. I ship snus from Sweden by UPS and it takes three days, fedex had my mounts in a different Central European city for a week at a time
Have you tried Meopta? Apparently they made the Zeiss duralyte and they are less than the S&B, Leica, Swarovski etc tier
I get the initial interest to continue to use fixed power scopes as there seems to be less things to go wrong compared to a variable powered scope. Having said that, modern variable powered scopes in my opinion are just as reliable as fixed power models (especially) mid to higher end makes. The flexibility of modern variables is a real advantage over fixed power models and often are less expensive due to the modern economy of scale of production economy over less volume produced models. If this is going to be on a higher caliber gun I would be reluctant to use a cheaper scope like Simmons. Phil.

I was hoping the case of S&B where the 6x is the entry level foreign production scope but still very high quality might also apply to some brands that offer a 4x.
