I just saw a 17-9 and it looked nice.

Ignoring the idiot hole, how is the quality of these new S&W revolvers and how do they compare, accuracy, trigger, fit and finish wise to the older model 17s?

Accuracy in most cases is better, I find, but finish doesn't compare. I don't like stainless revolvers, but I buy them now because I have to do the finishing work myself.

I have a 17-9 and the fit and finish is just as good as my 19-3. Trigger is great, accuracy depends on the quality of ammo you are using.

The only issue I had was spent casings were hard to remove from the cylinder, Murray Charlton fixed that.

I know some newer Smiths have had QC issues like barrels not being indexed properly. i would also rate the level of finish as being better on the older guns.

Having said that I have fired a friends 10 shot 617 and it seemed as good as any of my older S&W's in terms of function.

I have had no issues with my 617 and was tempted to get a 357 based upon it

Older might hold their value better. There seems to be always some old ones kicking around for sale.

Ive got to use some older ones, and a new one and to be honest, I can't tell the difference. They both looked and worked very nice.

I'm waiting for the transfer on an older 617 stainless 6 shot. Lots of reviews seem to prefer the 10 shot, but just because of the larger capacity. Haven't read anything about poorer quality. I know many don't like the lock, but that can be deleted too, can't it?

Has anyone converted a 6 shot to 10 shot? One YouTube video shows swapping the cylinder and hand will do it

I've found in general people who are into revolvers are also into the time when revolvers were king. This fact should tell you that there could very well be a bias against the new production revolvers.

Speaking as a revolver collector and revolver competitive shooter I can honestly say in my opinion the new S&W's are every bit as good as the old ones. Can they can benefit from some custom trigger work? Sure. That's not any different than the old production revolvers. Most of the older revolvers have had work done to them at some point over the years. I've certainly owned and shot many older Smiths that aren't as good as my modern 686 that I performed a trigger job on.

Is there potential for a quality issue with the new production Smiths?? Sure. Modern Smiths come with a lifetime warranty through the excellent Murray Charlton. I've bought a few older Smiths that were described as perfect timing and "tight" that needed repair. If you're not a hobby gun smith you may not like getting the bill to bring an old revolver back to new tolerances.
