Sergey, what we are referring to when talking about "frankenpinned" is the spacer welded to the bottom of the mag well. There's another pinning method seen, which is a short pin welded to the mag follower, which doesn't require destroying the serial number on the under face of the mag well. These are less "desecrated" thus more desirable according to many milsurp lovers. I have one of each type, and indeed the one "properly" pinned looks better when paying at details.

As another tidbit of info, usually SKS'es are being discussed in the "Red Rifle" section, but indeed they could sort of also fit in the milsurp section. I'd say they kind of just bridge between both :)

Is it possible for you to send me a picture of that method? Or webside link on how to do that?

From Currton's excellent post in the Red Rifles section of this site

E3. Collectibles: The following collectibles are in the order of value. I do not recommend you shoot the top 2.

1. Made in 1949, in any condition. It’s the most sought after, extremely rare and valuable because it’s the first year of production and also has unique features that are not found in other SKS today.
2. Un-issued in mint condition. my definition is from the factory to storage, never been issued to the troops.
3. Non-refurb and matching in excellent condition.
4. Refurb and matching in very good condition.
5. Refurb and forced matching in very good condition.

Note: It appears that the second shipment of IZH import are pinned by welding a block to the bottom of the mag floor, thats too bad because the serial numbers would be destroyed and then a new serial numbers would be relocated to the left side of the mag, essentially making the original mag a refurb.

The IZH first shipment had the mags pinned in Canada by welding a rod to the follower arm, resulting in no change in the outward appearance of the mag, a less destructive way of pinning a mag but unfortunately new SKS shipment must be pinned prior to entering into Canada so I was hoping they would pin it the same way overseas, but that was not to be.

Anyways, now that all importers mag are blocked the same way, it makes the first shipment of IZH rarer, so a non-refurb IZH first shipment would definitely be worth collecting. see section I for pics.... curtton

I have one of the frankenpinned SKS's, the heavy pin on the bottom often breaks loose from the pan of the magazine * and failed on mine, ( I have seen one other SKS showing this sort of failure) - the pin looks to be spotwelded to the pan and is just too heavy for the pan to support it so it breaks out leaving you with a 5/16" hole in the pan & the pin loose in there, often jamming up the works.

Whatever happened to the simple rivet? Or the piece of metal hot glued onto the bottom of mags?

I've had both of those, which do nothing major to any of mags at all in terms of permanent alteration. Any welding on my guns un-necessarily...makes me cringe.

I think there is a third, even less destructive method to pining them. I think it involves putting a spacer where the follower spring is. There was a pic on the Red Rifles forum and the pin was so well hidden most people thought one slipped through un pinned.

This is beginning to happen to mine aswell. Right now its just loose and wobbly but it won't take much to get knocked loose and become a prohibited mag!

Ever wonder why a five round magazine is good , while a 10 round magazine is EVUUUUL?

I wonder if politicians have any mental capacity other than that to get elected.
