:bangHead: So I decided to take the Quebec hunting course this summer. The woman on the phone said I only needed the hunting course when I mentioned my PAL. Turns out they needed proof that I took a firearms safety course. I faxed the papers in, but no luck. I had challenged the course in 1996 and have had a RPAL since. Quebec will not recognize a challenged course for a license. Is this the way it works in other provinces? Anyhow, no more English courses till May, and $70. Even if this is the way it is, it just doesn't make sense, they don't blink an eye when I've bought restricted.

I am in the same boat. I was told I didn't need the saftey course as I had done it already.I had challenged it also as there wasn't any place to take it in Alberta at the time. Makes the 4th season I have to miss due to their stupid ideas. The english courses almost allways fall on a day I have to work also. What the problem is they want their $70 bucks again for a course we already have.
I took the old hunter saftey course that Alberta had back in 1973 and read the new book and challenged the test. But they want us too sit thru a whole day of it again. What I want to know is if we have to write the test again as we have already passed it once.

There are still some openings for the French course. I'm not very good in French but can understand a bit. You have a right to have the multiple answer test in English. How hard can it be, just common sense I guess. Might do that, although the guy was trying to tell me no.

No it isn't. I wonder how many provinces even require a PAL to hold a hunting license. I bet no provines in the west do.

Where are the courses being held. I can understand a lot also and if the test is in english I am set anyways.I never in my wildest dreams figured I needed that course. also do you remember the ladys name at the fishing and huinting federation that speaks english. I also plan to fight this as I was told I didn't need the saftey course to hunt just the hunting course.

I went through the same thing 2 years ago and it's a BS money grab by the government. My hunting partner is an instructor,if you like i can ask him when his next course is.By the way I did it in french and it was pretty easy, common sense questions.Another option for you is the hunter apprentice certificate.Just call the minister de la faune , tell them you want your apprentice license,a liitle bit of personal info and you get a number that allows you to hunt anything in quebec, except turkey.Hope that helps

Yes I would appreciate that. Thanks for the info on the hunter apprentice, I'll call them.

You don't need a PAL to get a hunting license here. The normal progression is hunter's safety course/non-restricted firearms safety course, hunting license, PAL, restricted course, law 9 course, RPAL.

The hunter's course, back when I took it, was a veritable joke. It was one day with a multiple choice test at the end. If you didn't understand a question on the exam, rather than explain the question, they would just give the answer. My wife took the course more recently (within the last 10 years) and now it's a 2-day affair consisting of 2 distinct parts: firearms safety and hunter safety. It is usually given on Saturday and Sunday.

If all you want to do is play at the range, you don't need the "hunter's" part and can go directly to a PAL. Which I'm guessing is what happened to the OP.

looch. I have my RPAL since 1996. I took the hunting course in August, because I wanted to hunt. My point is they don't recognize the fact that I challenged the test and passed back then. I'm not sure if the safety course is just another PAL course.

Let me get this straight: you took the hunting course and you already have an RPAL. You got your RPAL by challenging the test.

You have fallen into a bureaucratic crack - the MRNF doesn't care about your RPAL. For them, it's about whether or not you took (and passed) a safety course. Which, in fact, you did not.

That bites, man.

it s written on the back of the card ( i still have mine) and it s saying which "weapons" you can use for hunting .. like crossbow, bow or firearms ...

if you dont have (so you have to follow) the quebec firearms safety that lead to the PAL you cannot hunt ... so if you have a correct PAL from outside Quebec you need to follow again this firearms safety course. and you re correct this is a two days course but again if you never followed that course in Quebec you have to. you need those two days and the following certificate to get la carte de chasseur ...

and you re right again when you have the RPAL you have to follow the lovely law 9 safety course until a new law changes that, dont forget to pay every year your shooting club license (and nothing is said in the federal law about that ....)

again guys there is a lot of stuffs done in Quebec against our hobbies and sports so please join any organisations that is helping and fight against that rules ...

all the best.

all is written in this booklet

Where in Quebec in August did you take your course.I took mine in Fitch bay.

Took it in Lachine. I'm just gonna let it pass until next spring. They'll be more English courses then. Law 9 applies to anyone with restricted. The club you join will give it to you. Of course they will demand their lb. of flesh. Join a club in Ontario if you can, then you bypass it.

You got it right. I would have taken the GD course, but the woman I talked to said I didn't need it cause I had my PAL. I had no idea a challenge was no good.

What pray tell is this Law 9 stuff. To get my RPAL I took the two tests and paid the 85 bucks which I got back and they sent me my card.

If you have an RPAL and don't plan on owning a restricted firearm, you're done.

**If, however, restricted firearm ownership is in your future...

- you will need an authorization to transport
- you can't get an ATT without proof of club membership and passing the Law 9 course (theoretical and practical course/exam given at a shooting range)
- for future ATT's (they are only good for a year) you will have to sign that club's attendance book at least once per year to prove that you are in fact using your restricted to practice shooting.

Aside from the obvious BS, there is another big problem with this chain of events: Clubs here are non-profit and many don't offer firearm rentals. You are responsible for making sure that you have a restricted firearm to complete the Law 9 exam. Club members, out of kindness and interest in advancing the sport, often loan their own personal firearms so that newbs have the equipment necessary to complete the test.

**There is the collector's route to possession, but I am not familiar with it and from what I understand, more BS involved.

Trying for the initiation hunting license but seems you need freinds that hunt for that also. I am really down as I bought new hunting cloths and equipment as I thought I could hunt this fall finally.

safety course...

If you don't mind coming out to the Eastern Townships, there is a guy in Sutton who will get you the material & then give you the test. IN ENGLISH also. If you're interested, let me know & I will inbox you the info how to reach him.

You live in Ayer's Cliff? I'm jealous. We used to deer hunt just off the 143 north of the road to Hatley.
