I've been buying and selling guns regularly for a few years now, looking for the perfect pistol. I've tried lots, but can't seem to find one that really feels comfortable. Here's what I've owned:

HK USP 9mm (owned two of them)
HK USP Expert .45
HK Mark 23 (owned two of them)
HK P7M8
Glock 21
Walther P22
Ruger GP-100
Ruger Vaquero
Ruger Single-Six

I am always drawn to the HKs, because of their reputation for quality, and because I love the way they look. But, they really aren't that comfortable for me to shoot. The Glock 21 likely had the nicest grip of any gun I've owned (but I never actually shot my Glock). I can only afford to keep one or two at a time.

Anyway.... I am at a loss.... what should I try next? I am thinking of trying a Kimber 1911.

I guess what you're really looking for is the perfect pistol for you.;)
That's a great discussion starter. :)
Like you, I have worked my way through a dozen or more different makes and types of pistols, looking for the ONE pistol that is IT. The ONE.
I keep going back to a Glock, in particular a G17. Maybe Gaston's trying to tell us something.
I LOVE the look of the Beretta 92/96 series guns, and currently own a 96 Vertec. Nice to look at, nice to shoot...but I know it's not the Perfect Gun for Me. That gun is still "out there". (Or lurking in my safe):D

Given how well you shot my 1911s on the first go-around , I'd say try one of those if it was comfortable for you to shoot. Was thinking if maybe a double stack might be easier for you to shoot though ?

True... Gorky has a very nice Kimber Tactical Pro, among others, that I tried, and I seemed to shoot pretty well with it. I also tried an STI Viper at Wild West in Edmonton, and shot better than I ever did with my HKs.

I think you already had the perfect pistol twice!!! when you had that Mark 23 :p

Yeah, maybe. But, I have probs with the safeties and slide releases on some 1911s (I am a lefty).

I wasn't all that jazzed about the Mark 23... my wrist often hurt after shooting it (I have no idea why), and the safety would skin my thumb knuckle on the recoil (another pitfall of being a lefty).

What about an SP-01 with ambi safety and reversible mag release ? Or maybe one of the Tanfoglios that FV is bringing in (not sure if anyone else in Canada has em right now ?)

You know... IMHO I feel that the "Perfect Pistol" is the Glock 22.
Why?

-Inexpensive
-Easily maintained / Very durable (no rust worries)
-Few moving parts
-Part replacement are easily attainable and very cheap
-Functions well under extreme situations
-.40S&W is a decent all-around cartridge
-.357SIG barrel is an option as well and uses the same magazines (5 second swap) for flexability
-Grip size anyone can use
-Proven track record

I think you should bite the bullet and go for the STI Executive. :)

Don't know what you're budget or caliber preference is, but from what I've heard (not personal experience) the quality of these are unmatched. And as for the aesthethetics...

The tactical is pretty sweet too...

STI's look to be well built and reliable, and all the guys I know that shoot them, really like them. Weight, as opposed to a plastic gun may help with recoil/ follow up shots.

Perfect Pistol

I've owned alot as well.
Hk usp, HK P7M8, Beretta 92 and 96, Vertec, Glock 22,26, 17, 20,21,35, Smith 45, 10mm,9mm, Colt 45's (dozens), Browning HP, Sig P226,P220, others I'm sure I'm forgetting.
What works well for me, may not work for you.
The two I keep comming back to are the HK P7M8 and the good old Browning High Power. Wish I could find another HKp7m8 or a P7M10 at a decent price.
But in my quest for the perfect all around pistol will most likely take me back to the good old HP in 40, at least until they make one in 45 ACP or 45GAP.

Actually, I was thinking for a next/future pistol I'd like to try a 1911-style something (Kimber?) in .40S&W :)

The only 1911 I've owned was a Norinco... heheh

I am leaning towards that, but I don't know what kind to buy. I would want a high quality by basic one.

I've heard good and bad things about Para's and Kimbers. I've only heard good stuff about STIs. I would consider a Para SSP, Kimber Custom II, or STI Ranger II. Which is the best of those three?

Uncle Walther,
you need a good 1911 pistol. I was told picky shooter will settle on 1911 and I think it should be an answer for you.
