I am thinking of putting together a 35 Whelen rifle for carrying around for hunting. My question is about Tikkas

If I start with a long action ( 270 0r 3006 ) is it more expensive or difficult to rebarrel the rifle to 35 whelen ?

I have had other builds on a rem 700 action with great results and was wondering if a tikka action posed any issues.

Thanks in advance for all the information.

What kind of Tikka? If you're talking about a T3/T3x, they're all the same size anyway. The only difference between them is a bolt stop and a mag spacer. Just get the right bolt face. If it's a vintage Tikka, then yes, you'd need an M65, 658, 695, etc (long action).

COAL is (I think) the same for the Whelen and the 30-06, so the Tikka mag should (in theory) be okay too. The bullet profile also shouldn't be an issue because it feeds the 9.3x62 just fine.

I've had Tikkas rebarrelled. No issues.

Here's the question - wouldn't it be cheaper and easier to just buy a Tikka in 9.3x62?

All this is Correct ! Except he wants a 35 COLONEL So custom it is ! RJ

The best bet would be to use the same mag and floor plate as the 30-06 or 9.3x62, not sure if there is a difference. Another option would be to re-inlet the bottom of the stock to take an Atlasworx AI type mag system which uses the 3.715" mag. This will drive the price up and you'd be better off with a custom stock. It is quite finicky to fit right, once bedded they work well as in the picture of a 7RM, Floorplate takes 30-06 or 7RM AI mags. With a bit of fiddling one can also fit the 5 shot polymer Magpul 30-06 mag.

Buy the lightest 30 06 or 270 and build your 35 Whelen as light as you can... for carrying around for hunting...
Personally I would prefer a .338-06 as it is superior at all ranges over the .35 Whelen in trajectory and energy.

This is True ! And I have a 338-06 A Square but OP wants a 35 Whelen so it don’t matter what we have or like ! Jmo RJ
