Question about a SKS "Shooter" rifle??

I have experience with a 1950 Russian SKS that has the Spring loaded firing pin. My question is, when you buy a new Chinese made, or even a newer model, Russian SKS with a Chrome Lined barrel, does everyone have to upgrade right away to get the spring loaded firing pin??? Or, once the cosmo is all cleaned out, are these cheaper rifles fine, and don't slam fire?

My 1950 Russian, would of made the perfect shooter, but it did'nt have a chrome lined barrel.

I basically wanted to make a good range rifle for surplus ammo high volume shooting, so what rifle would you guys suggest in starting out with??? I figured a refurb Russian or Chinese chrome lined barrel, then I would just upgrade the stock, and upgrade the fireing pin. Either that, or I will just look for one all ready on EE, that will meet my requirements.
 
Keep it clean and the firing pin is never an issue. The SKS was built to be manned by Communist peasants, if you had to do more than keep it moderately clean to keep it firing, it wouldn't have been released.
 
my chinese is bone stock and never had a single problem. I believe the milsurp 7.62 uses a heavier walled primer seated deeper into the case to help prevent slam fires, like most military ammo. BTW, I completely forgot about the firing pin when I first cleaned the cosmoline out of it and had no problems with it, shot over 100 rds with the bolt full of cosmoline :eek: no slam fires, but I wont miss that step next time :D
 
Take out the bolt and shake it. If the firing pin rattles, the rifle shouldn't slamfire.

Not having a chrome lined barrel does not change anything about it being a perfect shooter, in fact many have argued that the non chromed barrels are more accurate, though I do not know if this is true, but my Russian NON chromed barrel SKS is more accurate than the Chinese chromed SKS I used to have.

If your saying this because of the corrosive ammo issue, I would not worry to much. Both chromed and non chromed versions should be cleaned after shooting anyway. Rusting depends on the humidity of the area you live in, and both chrome and non chrome SKS's have NON chrome gas chambers, so both will have to be cleaned after firing corrosive ammo in any case.
 
There is always an argument about which one would you choose Russian VS Chinese I think we should start a vote. Chrome or not chromed in my opinion Russian is better.
