My friend has happened across a hurtin' old stevens .22 bolt action rifle. my concern about this rifle is that there are no serial numbers anywhere on the gun and the only marks on it are "TRADE MARK STEVENS REG US PAT&FGN
22 short or 22 long rifle. how will he go about regestering it?

Simply call in and register it without a serial number. Lots of guns manufactured before 1968 didn't have serial numbers. The CFC used to send you a little sticker with a number on it with your registration cert and you were supposed to put the sticker on the receiver as a serial number. I have been told they don't even bother with that at this point. I haven't registered one without a serial number for a few years, so I can't confirm that myself.

cool thanks! is it normal on these things to be functional with the stock removed? not that i'm going to try it, i just noticed that it would work whilst looking for a serial number.

I can verify this... I regularly shoot a members stevens 44.5 @ our club and his has no markings on it anywhere. When he called into register it etc they simply sent him a little sticker which now sits on the side of the gun.
