Hello,
I have a JC Higgins model 20 12 gauge sears Roebuck and co 583.58. I was planning on refurbishing it. I noticed that it appears to have a muzzle brake, does anyone know anything about these guns? I specifically interested in knowing about the choke size, and if anyone knows how to dismantle the muzzle brake for cleaning and reblueing. Also if anyone knows what the on off switch on the side of the receiver is for that would also be great.

Thanks guys
Paul

the on off switch looks like a mag cut of .it will stop shells from comeing out of the mag when you pump it so you can drop another shell right in to the chamber without unloading the mag .D

The choke unit is likely aftermarket. The actual choke tube screws in from the front, and different sizes could be installed. The tube is probably marked.

Hi:
I used to have one of those in 12 gauge. The choke system is integral to the shotgun. Chokes came in package of 3 (short, medium and long range) rather than now a days full, mod or imp cyl.. It used a C clamp style removal tool very much like the WinChoke system. I have removed the chokes using plastic jaws on channel locks. If I remember correctly short, medium or long range were engraved or struck into the metal at the front of the choke. The long range choke would pull the petals off our newer wads and coat the outside of the choke but still inside the flash hider, kinda looked like a porcupine after a while. I ended up putting the short range choke in with some anti-sieze on the threads and never had any problems after that.
Hope this helps a little

Thanks guys, I looked at the end of the choke and indeed it is labeled short range. I will measure it when I get my caliper back from my dad, but I imagine that it would place it around improved.
