The one and only revolver that I have and ever had is a S&W 586-3. I have had it for a few months now and put about 200 rounds thrugh it and the cylinder no longer spins freely. I am assuming this is because of lead build buildup. I have been cleaning the gun after every visit to the range but I cant figure out how to take the cylinder off.

Cylinder removal is easy.

Remove the lower front screw on the side of the frame that is opposite to the one with the cylinder release.

Once the screw has been removed the cylinder & crane can be removed by simply opening the cylinder & pulling it forward.

Be sure not to lose the small screw you just removed.:D

You shouldn't NEED to take the cylinder off entirely (unless you've dropped the pistol in a septic tank or something; all you should need to do is wipe the front of the cylinder off with some Hoppes and a clean cloth, and make sure the back edge of the forcing cone doesn't have any built-up lead or copper on it (a bronze brush will take that off afetr you swab the bore).

It is not a matter of need, its all about the want.

Another question. Can one take out the extracting rod as well, or does that require special tools?

Its reverse threaded and many a rod has been ruined by a hot shot with a pair of pliers:mad: . There is a specific tool for its removal however it can be done without such a tool if great care and caution is taken. If its really mucky inside, simply let the whole cylinder assembly soak in Hoppes #9(small can works great as a tank for this), remove and rotate a few times and work the ejector rod. After a short while its sparkling again.:dancingbanana:
Cheers
