Question about handgun storage

My collection of pistols/revolvers has grown faster than my facility to store them, and I don't have the cash right now to buy another cabinet or safe, (Christmas costs and all). I was wondering what the rules are regarding keeping restricted pistols/revolvers stored in the locked case that is used for transport, other than the obvious shortcomings such as: easy to carry away by a thief, or not as secure or as protective as a safe.

From the Firearms Act.

STORAGE OF RESTRICTED FIREARMS

6. An individual may store a restricted firearm only if

(a) it is unloaded;

(b) it is

(i) rendered inoperable by means of a secure locking device and stored in a container, receptacle or room that is kept securely locked and that is constructed so that it cannot readily be broken open or into, or

(ii) stored in a vault, safe or room that has been specifically constructed or modified for the secure storage of restricted firearms and that is kept securely locked; and

(c) it is not readily accessible to ammunition, unless the ammunition is stored, together with or separately from the firearm, in

(i) a container or receptacle that is kept securely locked and that is constructed so that it cannot readily be broken open or into, or

(ii) a vault, safe or room that has been specifically constructed or modified for the secure storage of restricted firearms and that is kept securely locked.

My interpretation of this is that the state of transporting a restricted (ie double locked), is good for storage as well.

The way your want to do is safe and legal and it's what I do.

Trigger locked, locked hardcase, ammo separately locked.

I used to store my handguns in (locked) pistol cases before I got a safe.

btw I just went from a big mouth to not having a life in one post ;) :dancingbanana: :runaway:

If someone comes into your house and robs you and takes that transporting case with your gun in it, then somehow your gun winds up in some kids hand in school and this kid blows away some students, what then? Besides all those dead students, what kind of field day will the politicians have after against legal gun owners? get a safe or cabinet dude.

Come on now, are you trying to give me a guilt complex. I am fully aware that a safe would be the "preferred" storage method, but my collection instantaneously grew and I intend to get a cabinet or safe as soon as possible (maybe from Santa?). I would never want a senario like you are describing to happen. Besides a safe or cabinet (although far superior to a case) is still no guarantee to prevent this.
All I wanted to know was if what I described was legal and thanks to the replys I have got my answer.

Drill a hole into the bottom of your case.

Locate the joists below the floor in the closet closest to your sleeping area.

Lag bolt the case to the floor joist.

This will eliminate most of your legalistic and moralistic worrying over safe storage.

I would hide the locked case before I bolted it to the floor.
Just don't forget where you hide it:D

My transport cases are cheap plano's and I could probably rip them open(locked) with my bare hands so I don't really think it satisfys the provision that the container be not easy to force open.

A metal toolbox would be better.

If its space your worried about you could just lock up the lowers and then store the slides in a safe place.

that is if your not talking about revolvers.

other then that you just have to stack them better in the locker

^^^ ditto what 65mag says. This is your best option.
