I recently was given a beautiful 1952 Russian SKS as a gift. The only thing is it has one of those cheap looking aftermarket detachable AK style 20 round ( pinned out at 5 rounds) plastic magazines. I've been yet to fire the gun I'll be shooting it this weekend for the first time. I've noticed when the magazine is in I can't charge it, it won't close. Only when I take the mag out does it close. But does anyone know if this is a common thing with these guns and type of magazine? And will it close when the magazine is loaded? Also would I be able to replace this mag with the original 10 round built in magazine that SKS normally come with?

Haha thanks again. As I said I'm new to this website and still trying to still learn how to navigate it properly. I'll head to that forum for sure. Thanks big guy

Push down on the mag follower and release the bolt. Should close I'm guessing. Close the bolt slow or you'll catch your fingers.

Yeah I noticed it will close when I do that. Do you need to manually do that too with your finger when it's loaded as well? So I'm guessing this is a common thing with these magazines then eh?

No, all you need to do is to pull the bolt back and let go. Keep your fingers away! The bolt will come forward on its own. It will lock back again on empty. Reload and release the bolt by pulling it back again for the next rounds.

No the mag pushes up on spring loaded tab when empty, if you take the mag out and put your finger in the mag well, you can push up on it. Helpful if you want to lock the bolt back.

Lots of videos of the sks on YouTube might be worth a watch.

Ok awesome thanks. Good to know. Also is it possible to put back in the original built in 10 round magazine that the SKS normally comes with, or has it likely been modified where it wouldn't fit anymore?

Those Tapco polymer mags work just as good as the originals. It sounds like who ever had it didn't do any filing. You need to file the inside of the magwell and thin the wood out to make some room, it's probably squishing the hell out of the mag body or the mag spine and catch have not been properly filed and fitted or both. I have a 52 original Russian mag I'd be happy to trade for that Tapco. Pm me if you'd like
