Question about powder variations for .300 win mag

I just started reloading my .300 win mag. I'm using 147gr FMJ boat tail projectiles (yes I know that's on the lighter side) and h1000 powder, magnum primers.

I'm trying to load 81 grains of powder, but find my powder measurer is off by +/- 1 grain. While I have a powder trickler it is very labor intensive to get that exact number. For general range practice 200-300m will that variation cause a substantial change in bullet impact? For any competitive shooting I would spend the time to get exact measurements, I'm just wondering if it's worth the time just for practice rounds?

I'm feeding a Remington 700 26" varmint barrel with 5r rifling.

Thanks for your input.

Yes, a grain difference will definitely change POI a fair bit. If you are trying to ring a 12" gong at 200, not a big deal IF that is all you are wanting to do. If you are trying to reliably hit a 3" gong at 300m, good luck.

I load to 0.1 grain but I am all about accuracy. Some load even finer than that. Others load to within 0.2 or 0.3gr and call it good once they are in the sweet spot of their rifle. It all depends on what you want to do.

If you're not looking for ultimate accuracy then you could come closer than 1 grain using powder scoops. For the price it's hard to beat the Lee powder dipper set.

If your powder measure varies by a full grain or more from charge to charge, either the measure is garbage, or you are not consistent when using it. When I used to use a measure, I would set my measure .2gr or so light, and then trickle to the exact charge weight.

X2 I set my Lee powder measure and as long as I am consistent with my operating it thoughs +/- 0.1 much to my suprise

You can't talk about 147 FMJ and accuracy in the same sentence.

A decent thrower will throw + or - 0.2 gr.

If you want to play with lighter bullets, buy some 150 gr soft points. They have a factory standard of 0.5 MOA. And 4350 would be a better choice.

Agreed: if you are only shooting short range 200m or less then 147gr is ok otherwise when you start stretching it out the bullet selection alone is already a handicap.
