I am looking at getting a Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather in 270 Win re-barrelled to 9.3x62.
Is this a viable option??
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks for your time,
...Bill.

No problem, may need to open up the barrel channel in the stock, depending on the profile of the barreled.

I almost hate hearing me repeating this but...

Ron Smith and sons, Winborne AB, as long as the barrel has enough meat on it, a rebore should run you about $450 or so plus shipping.

Had my 30-06 done a few years ago there.

I keep hearing this and then I hear that Ron is not taking on new work or is limiting what work he takes on.

That may be, the OP can give him a call. A couple other places will apparently rebore, don't remember names off hand, probably in other threads the exact same as this...

If Ron takes an interest in your project or likes you he will take it on. Bob Jury is the other fellow in Red Deer AB

I was thinking about this a wile Back

Looked at cost of Barrel .... about the same for any cal / install but does the person doing the work Have a reamer ???? add $200 or so

Brass .. cost of brass

Dies ... Cost

Bullets ... $

if I was going to do it I would go .35 Whelen

ps I have a Savage Long action was 30-06 is now 243 ... thinking about 358 win with a barrel / twist heavy enough to push to 35 Whelen ...

358 win would still make a nice in close bush gun .. deer.moose. bear / low cost plinker

358 win brass can be made from 308, 35 Whelen can be made from 30-06

More than thirty years ago I had Les Bauska in Kalispell, Montana, rebore a pre-war Model 70 in 270 to 9.3X62. It had been horribly neglected, and both the bore and the chamber were dark and pitted. Since the chamber dimensions of the ‘62 are bigger all around than the 270, the rebore cleaned them both up to new metal condition.

The rifle fed, chambered, fired, and extracted perfectly. I would expect yours to do the same. I hunted and killed literally tons of big game with it for years.

It is still being used by my son.

You can get ER Shaw 9.3x62 chambered barrels from Trade ex for 269. the contour is 2.5. The barrels are carbon, but if it helps, that is preferred for mono solids.

They also sell Dumouling actions, so you can make up a Don Heath special, like his baby. He shot thousands of DG, many with the 9.3, and had a Dumoulin towards the end. As a young guy he also carried a 9.3x62 Mauser while hunting in areas where he had a good chance of meeting insurgents in the Rhodesian bush.

Trade ex also have 9.3 barrels for the Garrand! But it isn't too clear where you would use those in Turdoland.

Anyone know a source for 9.3 barrels that are uncontoured? It should be easy to get one for a grand, but real prices are harder to spot. Any outside US sources? Walther has some but won't deal with the public.
