OK, this might be a stupid question but bear with me please.

When they refurbish an SKS, what exactly are they doing? Do they replace parts like the trigger group and stuff or do they just refinish the stock and clean stuff up? I'm just wondering because my 1952 refurb seems to be in pretty good shape. Now this is my first gun so I have nothing to compare it to but it seems to me that for a 58 year old gun, I could have done a lot worse...

Depending on the rifle it may vary from a simple inspection to repairs. Most silver bolt refurbs were just inspected or have a new stock.

Black bolts are bastard childs lol. They seem to have field stripped 1000 guns and spray painted all the metal parts and randomly assemble guns with any part in the big pile lol.

If you want beater get a black bolt if you want a nice looking shooter get a sliver refurb

some guns appere to be make work projects

In the case of the Yugo carbines the goverment pulled them on a schedule from storage for inspection. Whatever was needed was done at that point and the guns were tested cleaned re-preserved and recrated. all this was shown in the log book they include with all guns. The Russians I believe had make work projects to keep the masses busy. some of the sks rebuilds di not happen in a real arsenal enviroment with inspectors checking all facetys of the rebuild. That is why the lousy finishes and bolts and bayonets blued.

There is 25 factories in the old USSR where SKS were maintained. Depending which one did the refurbishment gets well done job or so so. It is the main specialist at the factory that controls this process. Some where really good and did supreme job and some just did not care. After USSR broke up some people just for got about those SKS and all the specialist went somewhere else and others did not have a place to go and they stayed. This is why you get different quality SKS. What I am trying to say you have to know where to buy SKS to get good quality one.

Don't be fooled by the "silver bolt" quest. Close inspection is still needed. I've seen bolts that have obviously been buffed with a wheel or something abrasive for sale in stores ( starts with L). It could be an attempt to remove paint. Check the bayo too! There was no difference in price
