Just wondering where I can find a Springfield Scout Squad M1A around Edmonton, and the approximate price of one.

Now before any of you say I should save my $$ and get a Norc, I already have one. I'm thinking about expanding my collection, and a synthetic or Mossy Oak Scout Squad looks pretty darn nice.

Also, since its got an 18" barrel, is it non-restricted? Or is it restricted like it's Socom brother with a 16" barrel?

Any info is appreciated.

18" barrel makes it restricted. Needs to be 18.5+ (470mm) to be non-restricted. If you want a springfield rigged up like a scout, your best bet is to find a Springfield M1A standard and either:

1. Have a gunsmith chop the barrel at 18.6 inches, re-crown and then re-thread. Unless he is rigged up with a slot cutter (to cut the spline slots for the USGI flash hider and they must be indext correctly) you're likely best off with a Smith Enterprise vortex flash hider and a gas lock front sight.

2. Import a factory 18.5 inch barrel from the US (criterion makes a nice one) and re-barrel that springfield. This option allows use of the original springfield flash hider that came with the Springfield M1A standard.

For what it's worth, if you go the aftermarket barrel route then IMHO you're better off using a norinco receiver as they are made to tighter tolerances. Granted the finish is not as nice, but they shoot just as good (if not better!) I've gone both routes and have to say that I am happier with my norincos. But I just had to have the springfields to find out....so I know where you're comming from. Gun pictured below started off as a norinco; re-barreled her with a cut-down/re-threaded take off of an M1A standard that I re-barreled as per option #2:

Also, my humble opinion on the restricted/non-restricted case is that the non-restricted rifle is so much more valuable and worth the extra effort of the above exercises. If you are anything like me, I spend 90% of my time shooting outdoors away from a range.

Good luck....

Thanks for the info Brobee. I'll have to reevaluate my plans, cause I really want it to be non-restricted. If I got a Scout Squad and just put a longer flash surpressor on it to make the barrel OAL 18.5" could it be reclassified as non restricted? Or would I HAVE to get a new barrel? What are your thoughts?

Flash supressors don't contribute to barrel length, only overall lenght (if it's permanantly attached).

Barrel length is determined by the rifled portion (essentially).

Checked out Wild West, they have a full length M1A and a Socom. I didn't see a Scout Squad. I guess if I can't simply change the flash surpressor to make it non restricted, I'll have to get a standard model and tinker with it a bit. Oh well, it was worth a shot asking.
