Question about short barrel.

i would get in contact with the n.f.a. and ask about a case here in ont. were a man was charged with cutting a shotgun barrel . the case was won by the defendant as it could not be proven that it was not a factory barrel . i believe it was wrote up in the n.f.a. association magazine.

Let's hope the police aren't reading this thread. Comments like this sure won't do your friend any good...
I doubt it matters.

If it's cut, he's in trouble. If it's factory, he's not.

OP saying that he thinks it might be isn't going to change anything.

glad to see it resolved in his favour. too bad he got jerked around by the higher ups. hopefully they pass a memo around to educate that these barrels are out there and are legal.

Just want to make sure about something. If you have lets say a 870 and the barrel is cut to 8.5 inch is it prohib ,if its a bought dlask 8.5 inch its legal ? Because i know someone who had one cut down right next to the pump that was seized by the Police and they're processing it as as a prohib firearm.

The so called "sawed off shotgun" is in the unenviable "prohibited without grandfathering" category and mere possession of one can end your Canadian shooting aspirations with a very serious possession of a prohibited firearm charge.

Yes indeed.

An old shotgun barrel cut to 12" is far deadlier than any shotgun barrel that was manufactured at 12".

Think of the children.

The short barrelled (bbls < 16") shotguns and rifles like the DA Grizzly and the Mare's Legs ... a loophole that might be closed by the Goodale legislation. People wandering in the bush with holstered nr Mare's Legs has not gone unnoticed.
Short barrelled shotguns are subject to strict federal controls and a $200 tax each stateside though there is an exemption for Mare's Legs.

Word came in this morning police "experts" said it was factory made prolly dlask so hes free.

Glad that part worked out the way it did. Hoping to hear he has no issues getting it back.

Curious .... during this "investigation" did the police seize the rest of his guns ? (assuming he owned more)

While anything is possible, your assertion is not likely.to take place. SBS's have been around for decades now and shotguns, especially manually operated ones, aren't generally a typical target for the gun grabbers.

He had at least a rifle to he took it with him after the accident probably, for now i dont know when hes getting it back and in what state is what im curious about, from what i know they didnt seize the rifle. Some of the officers im freind with at this station are hunters they knew it was probably legal but young buck didnt listen and had it "expertised". What im wondering now is how long it will be for him to get it back and will it be all scratched up and rusted since it was bagged from the accident in the ditch on a rainy night...

No exemption for the mare's leg. It is classified and marketed as a pistol down there, so NFA restrictions do not apply.

Except a shotgun with a 14" barrel and a full stock is still well within the legal length limitations of a non-restricted gun. Also, the super-short shotguns that are PG-only with like 8-10" barrels are restricted, and considered to be handguns.

As stated elsewhere, the mares leg is a handgun in the US. So is an AR pistol. This allows them to own short-barreled guns without going through the tax-stamp BS, but as soon as they fix a stock to it it becomes a SBR and needs the stamp.

When I first heard that Mare's Legs were non-restricted in Canada, I didn't believe it. Turns out I was wrong. I was sure that with the under 26" overall length, and US classification as a handgun, they would be restricted.

But they were deemed not to be a handgun in Canada, so were classified as non-restricted, notwithstanding their overall length.

Here is the catch. They were classified as n-r. As we have seen, there are increasing instances of official positions changing, and things are being reclassified.
I would not be at all surprised to see Mare's Legs reclassified as restricted.

Of course, I was wrong before.
