I put a Pachmayr Decelerator slip-on recoil pad on my Remington 870 that has an old wooden police stock with a hard plastic curved plate on the butt. This creates an air gap between the plate and the middle part of the recoil pad. Is this going to cause problems? The stock itself is also curved at the butt so removing the plastic plate won't help.

It might make a fart noise when the air gap compresses from the recoil....I wouldn't see that as a problem....I'd laugh my ass off!!!!

I don't think it'd be a problem. You could square up the end of the stock if you wanted.

I honestly think you'll be fine. Try it out and see what happens. A slip on recoil pad isn't exactly a precision milled instrument, and it sounds like the stock isn't a 95yo H&H that you need to keep in a hermetically sealed chamber.....

No issues with any of my slip on recoil pads. I have used them on all my older 12g guns that were fitted with just a curved plastic plate. Other then adding an inch to the length of pull, it will not change anything. I have not invested in a Pachmayer slip on pad, but have purchased half a dozen of the cheap Bulter Creek pads and they work great.

.....and I have never once hear a farting noise!

I should say that I have about 5 of the Pachmyr pads. I use them to increase the LOP on my rifles so they fit me properly. I'm really happy with them and their quality.

I use them, only size small though. They fit all my milsurps and shotguns.
A shell caddy over top will also keep the pad in place tight.
