Looking at getting a .223/5.56 bolt gun this summer. I want it to be light, very compact, and well built. After handling a .308 version, I've pretty much decided I'd like a Scout. So... I've got 2 questions concerning Steyr:

1. Who sells the Steyr Elite/Scout in Canada? Wolverine? It's not listed on their site, that I can find anyway.

2. What's the going price for a .223 Elite/Scout these days? MSRP is listed at about $1950 US on the Steyr Arms site, are Canadians being gouged on that as usual?

Your best bet is to contact North Sylva in Toronto, I think they are the Canadian Distributor and they can put you onto a dealer who sells them, also may want to contact Mark at Questar here on CGN and talk to him about importing one.

Well, it is up to you, but I've had a scout before and the thing felt clunky. To short, pencil fluted barrel and the bolt (butter knife handle) was a nightmare to cycle fast.

For the price, IMHO, you cant get something way better than this. (Rem 700LTR) It looks cool, but....

My 2 cents.

I have to agree, it is a very expensive rifle, I know that Savage made a scout rifle in the same calibres as the Steyr. Way cheaper, look it up on the Savage web-site.

I highly doubt anyone looking for a Styer is seriously going to consider a Savage. Though, for a brush rifle, I'd be hard pressed to spend the money on the Styer when the Savage would serve the purpose.

Yes, Canadians pay a bit more, though shop around, any dealer can get you one, through the likes of FN/Nicholls, but you may get a Scout for less than 2$K, an Elite will be a about 2k, or a little more, but again, ask a few dealers.

Between the Scout and the Elite, I would recomend the Elite over all the Scout models.

The Elites extra features make a few bucks more worth it, and for the price its a bargain. The pics are of one I used to have.

I have a Steyr Scout in .308win with a 3-9 Leopold on it. I bought it for the bush, short and light, decent accuracy to 200 meters (I have not tried farther with it yet). It's pricey, but it's a great hunting rifle. It's not meant for sitting on a bench pounding paper at 600yds. The only weak point is the built in bipod, don't use it unless you have to. It most likely can take the stress if you're careful, but if it does break good luck repairing it. Just mount an aftermarket bipod if you want to bench shoot.

I fondled a Steyr Scout yesterday at The Shooting Edge, try giving them a call. It had the Leupold Scout optic, was chambered for .308 and handled very nicely. If I recall correctly, they were asking $2600 for it. Daddy want....

If you can stomach parting with the money, buy it, I love mine. I paid about $2000 about 6 years ago for mine. Not alot of them around and have been going up in value.
