HI.

Could you tell me why we have the options to buy this revolver with the short cylinder ( with the ugly extended barrel ) and with the long cylinder? It is better to choose the short cylinder because de 9mm round is a short ammunition. It is better for the accuracy?

It also minimizes the "free-air" jump from case to forcing cone, hence improving accuracy. This treatment has often been done on 38 Sp. match revolvers, more so 50-70 years ago, but still sometimes seen.

For me it's about being able to have a "4 inch barrel" on a gun which is still 4.25" restricted instead of prohibited. The shorter jump to the longer forcing cone might also make a difference but that's a little offset by the shorter sight baseline length.

All in all I'd suggest that the short cylinder version is intended more for action shooting than for serious target shooting. For those after the tightest possible groups the longer barrels with teh longer sight baseline length is going to be better.

I think real problem is that 9mm Luger cartridge is not designed for revolver, it is relatively short and using faster burning powder in comparing with long cartridges such as .38 special. Fast burning powder will not work very efficient with long cylinder when bullet travel a lot before entering a barrel. Also gap between cylinder and barrel comes to play as well. It is debatable how distance to this gap and powder speed is affecting load performance, but i think short cylinder should be working better as well. Friend of mine was trying to use the same load with ~4 gr N320 both for 1911 classic minor and s&w 627 with cylinder converted to 9mm Luger - it shows 135 PF in 1911 5'' and not even making minor in revolver. I have short cylinder Alpha, probably i will try his load in it to conform this theory.
P.S. But even if it is true, it should be not big difference if you will use ether short or long cyl just for plinking with production ammo.
P.P.S. Other plus for short cylinder - it is lighter and should have less momentum.
