Question about the M44

I heard that the M44 was designed to fire with the bayonet extended. Is this true, and has anyone ever tested its accuracy with the bayonet folded and extended?

I've heard this as well. I can't comment on the open/closed accuracy. I fire mine with it closed and the accuracy is fine.
Been a while since I've had her out . I may have to drag her down to the range sometime soon.

Mine does not shoot accurately with the bayonet removed from the rifle. Accuracy returns when the bayonet is refitted.

Its was design to be used with the bayo extented. You would only folded it when in storage, travel or when fighting in CQB.

It might be worth testing the grouping, first with the bayonet extended, and then folded. If someone could do a test of this, and post the results, it would be much appreciated.

It really depends on the rifle. Some shoot better with it extended and some shoot better stowed. Either way, I definitely agree with the comment that it won't group with the bayo totally removed.

While rifles may or may not shoot better with the bayo extended, the rifle was supposedly zeroed with an extended bayonet. Apparently, though, the groups are centered but display remarkable amounts of vertical stringing

Yes it does effect barrel harmonics.
Shoot with bayonet folded out to have the proper POI.

Mind you each Mosin can be different to a degree, depending on how it was built, treated and stored over the years.

I have a 1953 polish M44 that was sportered many years back. The sights have NOT been moved( the front still has matching armourer markings) and it shoots bang on at the 100 yard mark and groups excellent if I do my part shooting it. That rifle has dropped a lot of deer over the years. That's the sum total of my experience in bayonets extended or removed on M-44's. My son has an original Russian M-44 here that I must take out and try it with though.

My results were this. With the bayonet retracted I was just to the left and high at 50 yards. With it extended I was right and high at 50 yards. I didn't see an improvement in groups.

we tried this out last Saturday with a Russian m44, with the bayonet folded in it would shoot a hand sized group that was high and left, with the bayonet extended the group was half the size and exactly where you wanted them to be
