All pics that I`ve seen so far on the net shows the model 70 with a barrel band around the fore grip. Mine does not have this. I found a site that says to find the age is to: subtract the first 2 digits of the serial number from 100. That would make my gun a 1987. I even googled a 1987 and nothing shows a marlin without a barrel band. Just trying to find out the exact year of this thing, incase I need parts.

I just googled and saw a few Model 70s. many with and without bands. But years of manufacture, maybe Google and contact Marlin Arms. i googled Marlin and the model 70 was originally made by Glenfield. marlin took it over in 1983 and dropped the barrel bands.

Cool thanks. This has to be one of the more finicky guns I`ve come across so far. Sometimes it fires, sometimes not. I`ve cleaned,cleaned,cleaned and made sure the firing pin and groove were burr free and spotless. I have a firing pin on order, should be here in 2 weeks...not sure if I`m throwing money away, but I had ordered it off the start. Unless someone else here knows what I should be looking at? I`m taking it apart right at the moment.

maybe the ammo? but sounds like a weak firing pin spring. much like the model 60 and the extractor recesses on the barrel often got plugged with residue.
Are you talking the hammer spring? Plus there is a little roller on one side of the "firing pin" retaining pin. This is called a "cartridge lifter roller", I know its on the right side but it doesn`t seem to touch or roll on anything at all through the whole firing motion. The only thing it comes close to would be the ejector arm, but then again...the roller is on the opposite side of this arm.

Ok, I just went out for the second time today to try a few other things. I heard if the front action screw is too tight might cause a feeding issue....not the case.
I tried Federal 525 bulk pacy shells, CCI`s, Blazers and Winchester Super X`s and same issues. One or two might fire and then nothing. If I pull the charge handle back just enough that the shell doe not de-chamber and let it go....this will 90% of the time work and the round will fire. Any body familiar with what I`m talking about? Any Gunsmiths tuned into this?

And which would that be lol. There are 4 springs:
1-disconnector spring
2-hammer spring
3-recoil spring
4-sear spring
Make sure there is no fouling around the breechface of the barrel or in the extractor notch, which could prevent the bolt from closing cleanly.
Is the magazine rubbing against the bottom of the bolt? This could slow down its closing.

I have the action out of the stock. I took the lower action off, just exposing the charging handle and recoil spring and barrel. I took a shell apart and emptied the powder out. I placed the shell into the extractor arm and release the charge handle and inserted the shell into the chamber. The charge block is fully against the barrel. What gets me is: With the firing pin all the way forward as to replicate it striking the rim, it can not go any farther forward...yet there is nothing at the back of the charge block for the hammer to hit.
I realize I bought this rifle with the knowledge that "it needed a firing pin". I knew that the guy that had it, was to have did something to the firing pin. It doesn`t look to be ground or filed. Can someone determine what the length is suppose to be? Mine measures 2.892 inches. Maybe the idiot filed it too short?

just took mune apart and meaasured the firing pin...2.904 and allow for my usage and previous owner.

there sure is not much space for it to move when hit by hammer. so front length may indeed be very importanr.
I called TnT out of Regina. They are ordering a new firing pin from Western Gun Parts. Its such a shame that I need to go through a middle man. I could have had the firing pin by Wednesday of next week. TnT said 2 weeks.
