Question about "throwing" a shot

I have watched barrel makers heat treat their new barrels. A simple process.

I wonder if unscrewing a factory barrel and adding it to the batch being treated would help.

Are you talking heat treat for hardness or heat for stress reliving?

Stress relief Cryogenic (or heat?) might help for internal stress but probably won't do anything if the bore is off center enough to cause the problem.

I scanned two of the groups. Thanks for the info on this thread. I think I will just end up leaving my rifle as is for now as it is more than adequate for hunting. My friend is still going to try a few things like adjusting OAL as he had quite a bit more pronounced fliers. We will also try timing between shots - perhaps 5 minutes between shots (or more) - to see if a more consistant barrel temperature will reduce this type of grouping. Either that or do a warming shot and then shoot a group.

After reading the replies and some pm's I do believe the barrel will end up being the culprit. It is fun though, because now we can plan on rebarreling!
