This one's directed at owners or naturally, anyone who know's their stuff.

I recently received my RPAL and have decided after much deliberation that my first pistol is going to be an ol' western six-shooter (specifically the Cattleman Chisholm). After trying a number of Canadian western distributors, the common answer given is they don't have the Chisholm but they do have the Gunfighter. The difference between the Chisholm and Gunfighter is supposedly just the grip (gunfighter-->black checkered; Chisholm-->brown checkered walnut).

My question being this: since i find myself hopelessly fixated on the Chisholm, can the grips be changed seamlessly? Are the grips between the cattleman guns interchangable so that I can simply procure those brown checkered grips and slap them on the gunfighter?

Reason I ask is because under close scrutiny of the product photos on the Uberti site, there almost looks like there are miniscule differences in the gun's body design...but this may be due to lighting or camera position differences between the two photos.

And I suppose I may throw it out there: Does anybody know of any other possible Canadian sources for the Cattleman Chisholm without having to pawn a knacker to afford importation fees from a US source?

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

-Thanks

Well, my thoughts are that they are both just a variant of the model 1873 so the grips should interchange. I'm about 99% confident the grips would fit.I haven't done a side by side comparison, though.
What distributors have you talked to about them?

Hey Wagthedog,
I'd assume the same as you, that the grips are interchangable. I guess I'm just finding myself unable to be 'too sure' i suppose. And as far as Canadian distributors, so far i've contacted the one's that are still active and can be communicated with:
-Shooter's Choice
-Country Classic shooting supplies
-Elwood Epps'
-Doc Rowlands Guns of the Old West
-Dante's Sports
..and about a dozen more from googling websites that are older than me with undoubtedly outdated information.
So far i've gotten responses from 3 of them, all of which can't tell me anything about the Chisholm.

Milarm in Edmonton has some Uberti Cattlemen and Beretta Stampedes (same thing). Also Del at Country Classic can get you Cimmaron single actions or USFA. I'm fairly sure the Cimmarons are Uberti. The USFA are my personal favorites. Don't look at the USFA website, it's addictive and expensive.

Like all clones of the Colt 1873 Single Action Army the grips will fit on but the fit will not be good. The grips for each gun have to be fitted to that gun to get a good fit. This is caused by the fact that the grip metal is made from three pieces , the frame , the trigger guard /front strap and the back strap. Even the custom grips have to be fitted , I have a $50 set of Stag grips that don't fit right and I don't know how or have the skills to make them fit without nicking the finish on my gun.

Wagthedog - Just sent some emails away, thanks for pointing out milarm! I missed that one. So far Del is the only one that can import that particular gun..

BEARMAN - That's exactly what I needed to hear (despite it not being what I wanted to hear hehe). That was very informative and you certainly saved me an awful suprise in getting a gunfighter with a spare grip set!

Now to just find the best source for the chisholm for the best price...

+1 what BEARMAN said.

I tried ordering a replacement grip from VTI for a Uberti Colt Navy, which supposedly has the same grip as the Cattleman, and it wasn't going to fit without some tweaking. Best to order the gun you want.

Hmm, interesting rhs. I guess we really have to be skeptical from some of these distributors: i've had a number try to convince me that they would be flawlessly interchangable, but there seems to be alot of evidence that would contradict their claims...
