So, I saw the conversion video on YouTube where they convert a Mosin to fire 45/70...I'm no machinist but I can manage the small jobs but machining myself a barrel and opening up the bolt face is well outside my skill level and comfort zone. Does anyone know where I can get a great barrel made and a shop that can open up the bolt face?

I'm not cheap and don't mind spending some cash on quality work but I'm not looking to go crazy with my wallet. I'm in the Lower Mainland but don't mind shipping across country...Any leads appreciated.

You have an excellent shop very close to you in Delta. bitsofpieces.com They can do it all for you including providing a Green Mountain barrel. The Mosin is a great action which I like a lot but are you willing to spend close to or more than $500 to have a barrel installed, then have the magazine well relieved to accept the cartridges, bolt face relieved, extractor ground, sights installed etc? By the time the conversion is done, you could be looking at close to a thousand dollars or more. You can purchase a used Ruger #1 or a Browning for that much and its ready to go.

A Pattern 14 action would be much easier and cheaper to convert and like the Mosin you can load it to the nuts or the point recoil becomes to aggressive. From time to time Siamese Mauser conversions become available as well and usually cost less than the components used in them. Call Markin and Weber and ask them to put you in touch with Don Robinison. Don loves Siamese Mausers converted to 45/70. The Siamese Mausers are getting scarce these days and are no longer cheap if they are in full military kit. Pattern 14 rifles that have been cut down are still relatively cheap and many have a lot of the work already done that you would need to do a decent conversion.

Thanks for the info on the local store, bearhunter. I dropped them a line but the cost for him to do the barrel and bolt face is prohibitively high - $850. I'll leave this dream to fade and die...I don't mind spending, but not that much :)
