I just got my Lee Challenger reloading kit... I am brand new to reloading.
Anticipating my new kit, I asked some reloading friends what kind of powder I should buy, and was advised Win 231. So I went out and purchased some. Today when I opened the load data sheet that came with the kit, Win 231 is only listed for 147gr lead.

So here I am with a pound of Win 231, a box of 125gr lead bullets and a .5 powder scoop and no idea how much of my powder goes into my cases. It's for 9mm.

Any info for a (about to be) brand new reloader?

I used 231 for 115, 124 and 147 gr bullets, no problems at all. I think the 115 load was 4.8 grs (but don't quote me on that)

RePete, will I need to buy a powder measure or can these amounts be measured with the provided .5 scoop?

(I will eventually buy a powder thrower)

Thanks for your info.

You should have a chart that came with the dies.

The .5cc scoop will give you too much powder.

Pick up a scale (not Lee) and use it and then get a powder measure.

RePete.

RePete, Thanks for the input. I went and exchanged the Win 231 for Unique. The load data sheet that came with the dies says .5 scoop of Unique or Bullseye.

Things to buy: reloaders manual, powder scale, powder measure... etc etc

I do not trust those scoops, different lots of powders have different densities. I've heard of more than one guy blowing up guns because of those friggin Lee scoops. Use a scale and do it properly. Also buy a reloading manual and get proper information. Most of the info on those Lee charts is old old old and hasn't been updated in a long time.

if you're shooting unique, i'm glad i'm not shooting next to you- too much smoke for my tastes- there was nothing wrong with the 231 if WEIGHED properly

badboybeeson,
let me know ill come over and show u some stuff
I will be back in town just before Christmas. You can come over and show me the ropes. Course is going well... only 2 more months! But, I'd rather be out shooting :D

when you touch of that unique, you're going to see a blue cloud- not as bad as black powder, but sooty and blue nonetheless- and you use more of it than say 231 to accomplish the same goals- now, the 231 can be smoky with lead, but not so bad- then again, if you're outdoors, you might never notice
