Question Concerning SMLE No.1 Mk.III* Hand Guard Variations

It has been brought to my attention that the forward handguard on my Enfield may have been cut at some time in the past.

A quick Google image search shows other rifles with the same wood configuration. My question is was this always done
by individuals or were rifles sometimes FTR'd with the handguards set up in this manner?

This is a common armorer's repair.If this was done in service we will never know.
