I just bought a lovely little 1895G. I have ordered a set of Firesights from Brownells, because my old(er) eyes have trouble with regular open sights. My question is - to those of you that have scoped these toys, do you find that the added scope has made them considerably bulkier from a carrying point of view. I'm thinking of a low-power, say 1.4 - 4.5 or 6X scope, but I don't want to lose the "handiness" of the gun. Also, do any of you have a set up with the quick detach rings, such as the Leupold's? Can you still see your sights with the scope off? I really don't want see-through or tip-off mounts.

I would say to stay with open sights, Fire sights are a good choice. I tried scoping mine to help with low light conditions but went back to my Skinner peep sight setup because I liked how it carried without a scope. That being said the scope did help with poor lighting. I used the Leupold ultralight 2.5x20mm in Weaver Low rings, using a Warne 1 piece base. It's about as low profile as you can get.

I've got a Burris 2-7x32 Scout Scope on my SBL. Still feels pretty handy to me! A little extra weight of course, but to me its pretty negligible compared to the weight of the gun. Balance is still fine. Maybe not *quite* as nice as without the scope, but hey, if you need the magnification it is an acceptable tradeoff. I use Burris QD Zee rings, which come completely off the rail and allow full use of the ghost ring sights on the XS lever rail that comes on the SBL. If you have the standard 1895G you'd need to add weaver bases to use the QD rings. Not sure if you'd still be able to see your irons over the bases. If you don't mind the looks of it, you could add an XS lever rail to your gun to maximize flexibility of sighting options.

One would think a scope being so light would not cause a problem, but it throws the balance right off and adds substantial weight that takes that great feel away from the gun. Just go with a skinner sight and forget the scope. The gun feels so much better without it.
