What kind of performance are you getting with 250 and 300 grainers?
I have heard rumblings of 3000fps with 300's?
I have a new TRG I am thinking of getting punched.

Thanks.

Hey, FYI, I have an ATRS .338LAI on a nesika action. Never tried the 250gr pills, but i get 2995 with US869, Im in the 111-112 gr of powder range. Have over 8 loadings on the brass, still going strong, never had to trim yet....

I have a 1:9.4 twist Rock Creek bbl, Im sure others will chime in ---- Kevan he has another one of ricks units.....

What he said.

Shot a deer in the head at 890 metres. No head left. No meat damage.
I did not buy an ATRS 338LMAI for punching paper. I use paper to dial it in.

Hopefully the internet gurus on here will not get this thread locked down as well.
What all of us who have 1 of my 338LAIs have found is that 3000 fps seems to be the norm with a 300 gr SMK.
Brads seems to be the slowest at 2995 and the fastest with excellent accuray is owned by a fellow in Ft Mac with 3090 FPS and still keep the best accuracy.
My own rifle sends the 300 gr SMKs down range at 3065 fps in the best accuracy node.
We tried shooting the 250s and got them just over 3100 fps but at 1000 yards we needed 3 additioanl MOA to make the distance.
As Brad mentioned brass life is unbelieveable, and I know there are going to be a bunch of guys jump on this, but I have22 reloading to date out of my own brass and it is still going strong. I know Kevan who has my 1st 338LAI has a really high count as well.
With my own rifle I need 19 moa to get to 1000 yards, I believe most of the other rifles that I built in this caliber are seeing similar results.

Personally I would NOT rechamber you TRG as I do not believe the 26" barrel is long enough to burn all the powder as this caliber depends on very slow powder in order to get the velocities hence the use of US869 which is designed for 50 BMG
Also you may have feeding issues with the TRG mag, this I am speculating on as I have not tried to feed the LAI cartridges in a 42, but it will not work in an AI mag.

Don't know how much this will matter, but the TRG barrel is 27 1/8" long, and that more than likley isn't long enough. If it is, I'd like to give it a try. I would also like to try some LAI rounds out of the magazine to see if they would work. I'll give you a call on Monday.
Thanks.

22 reloads out of a case ??
I don't dare say what I'm getting cause nobody will believe.....nothing else I load for even comes close to comparing, and thats the truth !! :D

maybe dont mention the round count down that barrel either, everyone will tell you its not possible to shoot that many rounds and still be accurate :D

Boy isn't that the truth. It seems that everyone who has 1 of my rifles spins wild tales of unbelieveable things that they are capable of and DO do on a regular basis.
Good heavens EVERYONE knows that casings will only last a few reloadings at most. Certainly 20 plus reloadings MUST be world record time again :p

I must say that any credit for the performance and longevity of my rifle has to go entirely to the builder for his expertise and choice of first-class components.... :)

At the low rate I have been tossing lead these days I'll be pushing up daisies before the ticker hits 20 reloads per case. I better get shooting!

I'm not that suprised. If you headspace your casings properly, use reasonable pressures and neck size appopriately, it's entirely possible. I'm a total noobie reloader (since Oct '09) and I've used the same casings for a few runs, didn't even have to trim down any of them after the first time.

28 to 30, I have seen up to 32. you can get by with less, but longer is better. The powder burn rates are some of the slowest you can get. There are various arguments about how much barrel length is required to burn as much powder as possible, and it does get very complicated. From what I have learned over the weekend, I will not hessitate to try in a 27 incher. And yes, the extra 200 fps will be worth it.

I had ATRS build a .338AI on a Remington 700 Police platform with a ~30" Rock Creek barrel. I just got it last fall and since I am a wimp in the cold I have not played with it much yet; I also lost the little load development data I had... but I know I was getting 300gr SMKs 3000fps exactly at somewhere around 111 gr US869 with Federal 215M primers. Obviously I can't comment on brass life yet, but I only bought 100 pieces expecting to load them many many times.

Whats the optimum length of barrel for 3000+- velocity with 300gr bullets??

29 to 30 seems to be ideal any longer is just extra barrel to lug around that serves no purpose.
On the 1st 1 I built I started witha 34" barrel and cut it back in 1/2" increments betwen trips to the range. The chrony kept giving higher velocities until 30" then it started to show a loss in velocity below 29
YMMV

I personally found that working the numbers backwards based on my bullet drop at different distances resulted in my 300gr bullets doing 3065fps which is exactly what Rick is getting. BIG SURPRISE!!
These guns are like clones in terms of performance and load development so when someone takes delivery of one of these, there isn't any time wasted and extra cost associated with trying to figure out which bullet and what powder combination. In the past, I've pissed away a ton of money on other guns buying bullets and different powders trying to make guns shoot. It's definitely fun if you have the time but when time is valueable, to take a brand new gun to the range and have load development done in a morning with 20rnds down range, it's almost cheating. :)
