Question for Current Owners of Colt SM ACE

I was able to purchase a very pristine Colt Service Model ACE (manf 1982) from a gentleman selling out. Unfortunately he put the magazine away someplace ......for safe keeping. He is still looking. My preference would be to get an original mag and I have a request on the EE parts exchange now. A fellow CGNr advised me I could get an after market mag at Brownwells but they are on back order.
My question is relative to the mags that are in the new Colt/Walther production currently available. I believe this new model is supposed to be a close copy of the original ACE in size and dimension so I wondered if the mag was compatible. I see "extra" mags are now available for the Colt/Walther at my local gun shop. I don't have a mag for comparison and I wondered if a current SM ACE owner had tried one ..........thanks

I don't know if the Colt/Walther mags are compatible with your Colt SM Ace.

But I can tell you I personally did function testing with GSG 1911 .22lr mags with my vintage Colt .22 Conversion Unit [the one with the floating chamber] and found the GSG 1911 .22 lr mags worked well. Interesting, as 'real deal' Colt conversion unit .22 lr mags are $75 on up [if & when you can find them, ever] while GSG 1911 .22lr mags are relatively available & usually running $25 or so.

I'll see if I can did up the link to the thread I put up on here regarding my testing results.

Anyway, this might give you something you can work with until you can source original Colt SM Ace mags for your pistola.

Edit: Here's the link to the thread I was talking about above:

Go to page #2 for the specific discussion.

Here's a pic of my Colt .22 lr conversion unit on a Springfield Armoury frame I did up with spare 1911 parts I had on hand:

I have a full Colt Series 70 .45ACP top end for it, too, but use my .22 unit on it most of the time.

Thanks for your info. I went right over to the store and fortunately they had both a GSG and a Walther Colt so I was able to compare the 2 mags. The mags are the same length but the GSG mag is bigger in both width and depth than the Walther/Colt mag. and the GSG mag will not insert in the mag cavity of the Walther Colt. Of course without an original ACE mag for comparison I am still stuck wondering if either mag is a substitute. I guess I will have to get a temp ATT and take the pistol in
PS you were right about the quality of the mags, the Walther/Colt was a poor looking 2nd

I can't recall.... does the Colt SM Ace have the floating .22lr chamber? How about the slide stop, is it marked with a "2" on the inside flat? If so, it is just like the Colt .22 conversion unit [floating chamber & slide stop marked with "2"]. Then, I'd bet the mags for the Colt SM Ace and Colt .22lr conversion unit are the same mags. If so, then the GSG 1911 .22lr mag should work in your Colt SM Ace. But yeah, only testing will prove it.
