I just got myself a Rem 700 7mm Rem Mag w/24" barrel and was shopping for some bullets to load for shooting gongs at 1500m this coming weekend.

I picked up some 150grn SMK's but was told that the 162grn Amax would not stabilize with the Rem's 9.5 Twist rate as they are very long bullets and would need a 1:8 if I wnated to shoot them.

Is there anywhere I can find recommended bullets for my particular twist rate?

These will be for Gong shooting for now and Varmints in the spring (120grn V-Max for that) maybe hunting next fall if I get to it.

TIA
Richard

I have used 162 Amax in my 700p and the work fine. I have 2 boxes of berger VDL in 168 and right on the box it says 1 in 10 or faster. The Amax is a great bullet and is accurate. Who ever told you they wouldn't work is wrong.

Thanks for the info. If it were a .223 I was loading for I would know exactly which bullets I can or can't use but I am at a loss when it comes to the 7mm Rem Mag.

7mm Rem mag

I believe it depends on how fast you can drive them. My 7mmSTW has a 1 in 9 inch twist but I can drive the 180 VLDs at 3100 fps. You would have to test them and see what you're getting. 24 inch is not long for a mag. I shoot out of a 27½ inch Broughton 5C. What I suggest is to clock your hottest load for heavy bullets (say 162 Amax) and put the MV in the JBM program with bullet definition. Put 1600 yds as your max range. If you don't get 1100-1200 fps at 1600 then for sure you won't reach that far wether or not they'll stabilize. For a stability test all you need is to try them at 100 yds. My 22-250s (a Rem and an AI) both have slow twist. I can shoot the 55 gr inside a dime but as soon as I put the 68 Amax they're all over the place. I can't hit a 2 foot x 3 foot target. Good shooting.

The Amax will stabilize just fine. I found Re25 to work superbly in this cartridge lit by a Fed 215M primer. Never got alot of time to test but Retumbo was also showing promise.

There is little issue getting 3000fps and 3100fps is not out of the question in your 24" pipe.

I have been shooting the 162gr Amax for a number of years and it is a superb bullet. Now playing with some 180gr bergers which also show alot of potential.

If you can't find any Amax, the 162gr SST have almost the same BC as the Amax and are very accurate. That would sure put a hurt on Obtunded's gongs :)

Let me know if you need anymore help dialing in your 7RM. I feel this is the most underrated LR boomer around.
