Many thanks to all for your replies. The situation is that this all-TRW M14 belongs to my best pal, and he is not attached to it but would rather fund a nice new bolt-action rifle for himself. I, on the other hand, would very much like the rifle and its parts since it will have been his and will represent many good times spent at the range with him. It will also be an excellent .308 hunting rifle. The Norinco and Polytech rifles are out because I cannot bring myself to own a product from a Communist dictatorship/police state, however silly some may find that to be.
Today another friend who has the proper status in Canada has agreed to buy the receiver as a collector's item-he has several original M14 rifles and would like to have a TRW receiver. The rifle can then be legally transferred to him, and I will then buy the USGI parts as required to complete the build on an LRB receiver. The Springfield M1a receivers don't appeal either, whereas the LRB is as close as I can come to an original forged M14 receiver and won't even be restricted. Thus all participants will be happy and I'll have a top-notch M14. I also want to get a new walnut stock, as I'm not partial to plastic or fiberglass.
Many thanks to all of you. This is a long-term project, as I know it will be expensive and I have very limited funds for my hobby. Like Gunny Ermey says, "I don't want no teenage queen, I just want my M14!"
