Greetings,

After thinking long and hard and almost plunking down 1200$ for an AR, I've decided that I will save money for my dream rifle, the Tavor. Now I've got a few questions for you tavor owners. I do have some time on the AR platform, but am no means an expert. Maybe 65 hours, 1500 rounds total.

1- Saying that, if I like the AR, is there any reason I won't like the Tavor?
2- I've heard that the bolt hold open doesn't work properly with pmags. Any truth to this?
3- what are your likes/ dislikes with the gun?

Thanks guys. Sorry if these have been asked before.

Bolt hold open works on normal mags pinned at 5.5 rounds, so I've found. It handles nothing like an ar due to its arrangement. That said, I really like it. So far it's main downside is it's trigger, which is quite creepy and bad. It takes some getting used to for sure. And of course the fixed stock. Seems to only really be a problem for gangly armed guys like me. Those issues aside, I love mine. The non restricted status is among it's top pluses. Go for it!

1. If you're big into the AR, you might not like the bullpup thing. Magazines close to your body, weight in the back rather than forward.

2. I square the backs of all my polymer mags and my bolt hold open hasn't seen anymore abnormal wear. Gen 3 pmags are good to go out of the box (bag) and are my fav mags by far.

3. Well . . . that could be a long rant from me. The biggest thing I like is that right now this gun is blowing up in the US. We get the benefit of all their gunsmiths and wild-guys making cool (or silly) stuff to retro fit to the gun. Hence: new forearms, new rails, new triggers etc.

It's really nice... a keeper. The trigger breaks in after a bit and it is hand assembled in Tel-aviv by old Jewish gunsmiths......I love both platforms.....the AR and the Hebrew Hammer.

Thanks for the info guys. I personally don't think the bullpup configuration will bother me. I don't really have any training time, but I do have about 100 rounds with an fn p90 and I really liked it. Mind you that's a different bullpup design, but you get the picture.

I was thinking it was simply getting use to it so I thank you for the re assurance.

As for the bolt hold open with pmags. Anyone here have any problems with 30 (5) pmags?

So with gen 3 pmags, the bolt hold open runs good as gold?

The Tar-21 is a great rifle. I too seen it as a dream rifle and dropped over $2700 for one, shot about 200 rounds through it and decided to sell it. Although it was a great rifle it was a lot of money for what it was and to make theost of it I would have need to put another $1000 plus into it for a comparable/respectable glass and for grip. At some point I would have been into that rifle for almost $4000+. That is a big number and one that is climbing into the ranks of buying the ultamit in my mind (a used .50:). On top of that and most important, I am a tall guy with long arms and no matter what I did I found that Mo matter the stance, I always felt like I was squished when shooting that rifle. Now if I had shorter arms this may not have been an issue but that's not the case.

As for performance it was flawless and was very durable and well built although the strap did get in the way of my mag change once in a while.

Hah! ha:

$4k he says? 4k!

Now if you'll excuse me: I need to go plug into my dialysis machine, seeing as I've cashed in both kidneys. :puke:

Got one. Still debating keeping it. Crap trigger from the factory, just plain crap. Not wild about dropping an additional $400 for a Timney either. I don't like how it fits me the much less expensive T97 feels much better. To each their own I guess.

Speaking generally, I love my tavor. The only reason I'd ever get rid of it is if the X95 became available. I love it's non stop reliability, I love that I can take it into the woods, I love it's form factor, I love that it's Israeli, and heavy trigger or no, I love that it's still more accurate than I am. This is truly a lifelong firearm.

Sold mine because I was having a kid and money was tight, but as the story goes, sometimes you do not realize how much you like a gun until you let it go. I am going to get another one for sure....maybe today.
I'll get the trigger eventually, because that really was the only drawback (and not being bolt gun accurate like my AR, but I can't take that with me to the lake)

Buy the tavor. If you don't like it, sell it and you will have well over 2k to buy the AR of your dreams.

As for the mags. Pmags generation 3 fit perfectly. No problems with the bolt hold open. The Tavor runs great, is super durable and handles well once you get acquainted with it.

That being said it is a bullpup. You will know whether you hate or like a tavor after you shoulder one for the first time.
